I only have 4, 2 cds, a sweatshirt,and a photograph,3 were signed at meet and greets, one on a cd I ordered.This subject got me to thinking about autographs, why do we want them,when did the custom start.Collection of autographs is known as philography.
Customs
In East Asia, an autograph from famous gentry is regarded as an honour. The value of an item bearing a high official's autograph could rise incredibly. In imperial China, an autograph from an emperor was priceless but selling an item bearing it could be a criminal offense.
In Europe and North America, asking for a celebrity's autograph used to be seen as a child's activity up to only a few decades ago. The boom of collecting autographs as a hobby came during the 1980s, and, as a consequence, many memorabilia dealers took notice, and what used to be an innocent hobby lost that innocence as both dealers and celebrities began to charge money for their signatures (especially on personal checks).
That practice, however, changes from country to country and in some, charging for autographs could be considered mercenary.(just more trivia)
What did Andre sign for me? Yes, I have the usual DVDs, but the two items I treasure the most are these: 1)At the JSO's first concert in the Dallas area on May 1,2005, at one of the last Meet and Greet opportunities, I approached Andre with a figurine. As I handed it to him, he asked me: "Is that for me?" Sadly, I had to ask him to sign it for me. You see, the store had only one or I would have bought a second for him. What was the item? A violin, complete with bow, that measures ten inches and is surrounded by pink roses. Know what it plays? Unbelievably, my violin plays a favorite of Andre's: From the movie Titanic, my violin plays "My Heart Will Go On." (Franz and Noel also signed.)
2) My next favorite signed piece is the letter that came as a surprise with the DVD from KERA: "Just For You." It has Andre's letterhead, the date of the April 24th concert in 2006 in his return to Dallas, and even his Post Office Box in Maastricht.
Audrey, I remember the figurine. I had taken my book, the "My Music My Life" for him to sign, but I had forgotten I had put his photograph inside the front. He opened the book to sign and kind of looked surprised, then said"Ya, I know him, handsome man"! then he signed the photo. i didn't have the heart to ask him to sign my book also. Later I had various orchestra members sign the back of the book.When I told Tuen "Last Rose" was my favorite of his, he signed, Last Rose, Tuen.As Franco was signing, up ran Noel,Michel&Kulean and said, "Can we sign, can we sign"? we all laughed, and they also signed, then Frank, Suzan & i can't read or remember the other one.
What a lovely item You have there Audrey how lucky to find such item that You could take along for His signature. I think He himself liked the violin, much nicer though to have it in Your posession with His signature on it.Some day might be a collectors item. I have His signed picture that I ordered and came with a lovely frame, maybe coming Nov. I will have a chance to get the signature personally, since He is coming to Denver Colorado. Kati
Only Memories, eh Shirley. No more Meet and Greet. Another musician signed my violin, but it was the wrong kind of pen and only a scratch is visible. I sent pictures of my violin which our Webmommie might be able to put up. Andre's signature is large on the back. Audrey
I took the photo book Lawrence Sudduth made of all the JSO members and gave to us at last year's Dallas Fans Dinner to the Meet & Greet in Dallas last year. It had JSO photos as well as information about each member.
Andre not only signed it, but the looked through it and commented on it. He liked it very much.
I then had some of the other JSO Members sign on their pages.
It was fun. It helped shy me talk to the JSO. I'm not like some who chase them down. I'm more reserved so this was a good way for me to get out there.
What Fun! That is the best part about this wonderful music. We have all the fun to go along with it.
I can see you now getting all the JSO to sign your book. Really cool!
In September,2005, I wrote and sent a letter to Marjorie thanking her for all her behind-the-scenes work and for sharing her husband with the world. I certainly never expected a reply and then about 6 weeks ago, I received an acknowledgment along with a signed picture of Andre. I was thrilled. It is framed and in a special place where I can see it every day.
Carol, that is indeed very special and I commend you for thinking of thanking Marjorie in a special way.She is for sure the "woman behind the man", a very special lady.

I am pulling for you, Kati, to get that signature. I saw that framed picture and almost bought it. Maybe next time. Yes, I couldnt part with that figurine. I was so lucky to have found it in a gift shop in Lewisville.
Hi Audrey, I am working on this year,s concert, I had to miss the Phoenix one last year, I had tickets for, I thought I will make it to Dallas TX , did not work. This Nov. He and JSO coming to Denver Colo. I live in the outskirt, have tickets already and hope to make this one at hope. Maybe I will get lucky and get a signature from him and ask Him for a csardas. Hi Kati: I just sent you something I took at the Sacramento California concert, last December. It was a wonderful Christmas program Andre put on. I had tears in my eyes listening to Andre play, Mary's Boy Child (and so did he).
I think that song and The Holy City are two of my all time favorites. It was majestic to hear Andre and his JSO play them.

Sally, thanks a lot for both e-mail too bad the recording is not longer of the music at christmas time. I hardly could wait until I will get my very late DVDs the one from the Christmas around the World, it is so beautiful I really did not care that Christmas was over the time finally I got them . I just kept listening to it, agree it is the most beautiful music. I was crying too. I have a hard time around christmas anyway, my family is very far and i miss them every year. Kati

I think that I have 10 or 12 autographs from André and many from the JSO members too. But the best autograph that André gave to me was the autograph on my Holzklompen (it is the same shoe from the "Klompendans").
I think it was 2003 when André was in Oberhausen (Germany). I met him after the concert at the tourbus. So I gave him that Holzklompen and he signed it! I think that he was laughing, when he saw that shoe

When i got to meet with andre rieu and his entire orcestra privatly i hade one of the music books that he puts out autographed my everyone! What a night that was!
