Left Handed Violin Playing
Katalin Krisch started it. She asked a question on the blog: Why all musical instruments made for right handed people, nothing for left handed.? This prompted me to look at Left Handed Instruments and Playing Instruments Left Handed. I was fortunate enough to find Ryan Thomson and he has agreed to share his expertise with us! Webmaster Sally

Does anyone think that a left handed instrument have to be made by a left handed person? Just reverse the strings and the rest would be the same, right? Kati
Hi Kati: LOL Cute about Lefties making LeftHanded Instruments.

I do not think all instruments are symmetrical, so just reversing things will not necessarily make it fit for Lefties.
Oh a thought, can you imagine the keys on a piano all reversed? Oh my. However, would we read the music?
More seriously, a piano as with so many instruments, one needs to use both hands. Music is written to be played with Treble, Base, (and some as the viola, Tenor) Clefts. Then it is specified as to Left or Right hand.
Kati I think you should take up violin if you are interested. I myself am going to return to piano lessons after all these years. While I played the viola as well, I want to focus on piano for now, and add viola again later. I still read music, but have forgotten so much. I guess the years from 6 to 50 flew by too fast!
Is that a picture of you, Sally? You know, i read somewhere once that whichever hand you use is controlled by the opposite side of the brain. So I think I must have a defective "right side" because I could not get my left hand to stay up with the right hand on the piano!I play a keyboard now, but it does the "left side" harmony for me, anyway i get by with enough for my own enjoyment. Don't read notes fast enough, so play mostly by ear. Who knows, maybe both sides of my brain are defective!
Hi Shirley: Can you believe that old photo? I tell you I am not old enough for the cars in the background nor the black & white photography. (remember color photos were costly and special)
I still have the piano, and I still play about the same!
Hello Shirley, do You think the people who play musical instruments so beautifully have to have a great feel for rhythm also? Do they have a good singing voice too? kati
Kati I'm sorry I'm just now reading your question.I was reading the piece by Ryan Thomson & came back here to see the comments. you do ask the most interesting and intricate questions!
I think that anyone who plays well has to have a sense of rhythm.Without it how could they keep in time with an orchestra? Plus the music is written to follow a particular tempo. I guess you could play without rhythm but I don't think it would be very enjoyable to the ears! And I really doubt that just because one can play an instrument means they can sing well.I think more can't than can, but that's just my opinion!
That is an idea Sally. I really liked the piano, never had a chance. Now, I do not have a piano, I am not left handed, just was curious. Yest I would say, with piano really does not matter, You have to have good left hand also. I do read music, but the only instrument I do have a hungarian zitter, right handed. 100 years old. People in Hungary use this instrument to play folk music, and the Fat Ladies are singing the song. I will make as picture of it, we can post it. You look very cute on the black and white. Kati
