Business icon battles tumor
By Christine CubŽ
FAIRFIELD - A prominent fixture in downtown Fairfield and the namesake behind Rosanna's Bakery on Texas Street - RosannaJacobi - is terminally ill.
Jacobi, whose sunny personality would greet customers entering her bakery, is battling an incurable brain cancer, husband Klaus Jacobi said Tuesday. She is 63.
Rosanna resides at home under the care of her family and the local hospice.
Neighbors and friends who know the famous bakery duo say the Jacobis offered customers more than sweet pastries. They offered a taste of life.
"There were working seven days week and were in there from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.," said Fairfield resident John Brunner, a close friend of the couple. "That was their entire life - it was the people they would meet there and socialize with."
Two years ago, Rosanna suffered her first brain tumor. At the time, treatment was successful.
The new brain tumor, which was discovered Dec. 10, is much more aggressive. Klaus said he received word of his wife's pending illness while delivering cakes with business associate Roland Hajszan. An employee at the bakery called Klaus to say Rosanna was not feeling well. Rosanna remained in a hospital in Vallejo through Dec. 22. On that day, she was transferred to hospice care in her home.
"She's shutting down," Klaus Jacobi said.
The American dream
Klaus and RosannaJacobi were married in Germany in 1963. They met in dancing school.
"She was a good dancer," Klaus said. "(I was) mediocre. I stepped on her foot and I guess that was the beginning of a love."
In 1964, the Jacobis moved to Chicago. A few years later, they moved to San Francisco and entered a business partnership, working at Schubert's Bakery.
By 1971, the couple decided to launch their own business and the Baronial Bakery was born.
Like most entrepreneurs, the Jacobis learned many hard lessons throughout their career.
They specialized in European pastries, cakes and cookies. They opened the Viennese Cake Box in San Francisco, a bakery at Geri-Towne Mall in Fairfield and through another business partnership opened smaller operations in San Mateo and Walnut Creek.
When they lost their lease in San Francisco, the Jacobis struggled with making payments on their Fairfield bakery, which had moved into larger space on West Texas Street.
They eventually filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in April 1996, but never let go of their dream.
By September of that same year, they opened Rosanna's Bakery in downtown Fairfield. They received incredible support, from their landlord to the city of Fairfield.
"Everybody helped," Klaus Jacobi said. "It's the profession we love and know best. We didn't want to move away because our customers were here . . . it's our life. For us, it was our dream. We made so many friends - we made all of our friends through this business."
Emily Low, Main Street Program Manager for the Fairfield Downtown Association, said Rosanna and Klaus have been downtown fixtures for years.
"They're an absolute team," Low said. "(At Halloween), kids were walking out with bear claws and fancy pastries. I can't imagine losing Rosanna. It just won't be the same."
New chapters
The Jacobis this year planned to travel to Switzerland, where Rosanna was born in the Ticino region.
Klaus said he and Rosanna planned to go there after retiring, which they were planning.
On Jan. 1, the bakery was transferred and sold to Hajszan, a longtime chef there. The Austrian native and Dixon resident Hajszan, 37, plans to run the business with his wife, Elisabeth.
Neither Klaus nor Hajszan wanted to disclose the specifics to what they call a "family deal."
"Roland is very devoted to his work," Klaus said. "We call him our adopted son."
Eventually, Hajszan said he plans to add new products to the bakery and slowly change the ambiance.
Any chance for a name change to the business?
"No way," Hajszan said.
For now, Klaus plans to take a time out from the world. No work is planned and he has an idea to go into social work to remain connected with people. He also eventually may help out at the bakery.
"It's an open book," said Klaus, 65. "I first have to overcome the loss of my best partner . . . I want to honor Rosanna's wish to be strong." ~~~~~~~~~
Rosanna's: A case study in success
By Brian Miller and Karl Dumas
The recent passing of RosannaJacobi has prompted us to reflect on the long and beneficial business history of Rosanna's Bakery in Fairfield.
One of the most difficult challenges facing any small business today is generating a positive response from the community for the products or services it provides.
RosannaJacobi led the charge in demonstrating that great customer service combined with a good product can create a legacy.
Rosanna and Klaus Jacobi first put their imprint of service excellence on the Fairfield community many years ago, and when business took a turn for the worse in 1995, they still managed to maintain their commitment to Fairfield.
The chronicle of Rosanna's Bakery could be used as a case study in any American small business development handbook. Start a small business doing something you love while providing a product and service needed in a particular community. Next, market your business to enable growth and have the savvy to take on the challenges associated with a growing business.
Rosanna's Bakery started its Fairfield career as a small bakery and pastry shop in Geri-Towne Mall. With the growth of business during the booming 1990s, Rosanna's Bakery opened a new 10,000-square-foot landmark building on West Texas Street that truly reflected the concept of the building as a cake. At its peak, Rosanna's included the bakery and pastry shop along with a full menu restaurant and a wholesale bakery that distributed products to many businesses, including some in San Francisco.
When the overall business started struggling in the mid-1990s, Rosanna's was forced to close its doors. However, this was not the end of the Rosanna's story.
The city of Fairfield Economic Development staff met with Klaus and RosannaJacobi in 1995, before the business closed. Throughout the challenges facing them at the time, the Jacobis committed to remaining in Fairfield for their residence and business.
With some technical assistance (business planning, marketing and business development) from the Solano College Small Business Development Center, the Downtown Improvement District and the city, Rosanna's Bakery developed new strategies to better focus on the needs of the community. Rosanna's downtown location was the result of these discussions and the commitment of the Jacobis to Fairfield.
The current location for Rosanna's Bakery on 1119 Texas Street opened in fall 1996. The business opened in a 1,400-square-foot storefront in a space that was vacant for more than a year before the Jacobis took advantage of the opportunity the location provided. Opening at the new location was a challenge but the Jacobis were assisted by the Mormon Church with free labor, Cunningham Design Conspiracy provided interior design services, Premier Commercial Real Estate provided leasing services, and the owner of the building provided tenant improvement dollars to assist in the installation of necessary new fixtures and equipment.
At their downtown location, Rosanna's offered more than pastries and cakes, with sandwiches and lunch specials, scones and a variety of specialty goods that quickly developed a devoted following. (The business also expanded into the adjacent storefront space).
What made Rosanna's Bakery a success was the passion and commitment of its hardworking owners, Rosanna and Klaus Jacobi. Their enthusiasm and commitment resulted in a unique business that filled a special niche in the local retail and food scene.
RosannaJacobi was an enthusiastic, confident, hard-working businesswoman and tangibly demonstrated that a small business - and a downtown storefront - are worth preserving. Thanks to her hard work, downtown Fairfield has a legacy business that under new ownership we hope will continue to inspire future entrepreneurs.
RosannaJacobi's photo was installed on a light pole several years ago as part of a public art project in downtown Fairfield. It's located on the northeast corner of Texas Street at Madison Street. We hope it remains there for a long time as a commitment of thanks.

Hi Marlene, Neck City was originally called "Hell's Neck",a rough & rowdy mining town in the 1800's.
In the early 1900's the name was changed to Neck City,the "neck"part because of two rivers
coming close together, at one point they create a neck."The Neck"meaning the neck of the woods between two rivers.Ironically, about names, my middle name is also SUE!I sometimes say"How do you do, my name is SUE"!

dear sally, My birthday is August 29th, 1933. Another "Sue" I live in brooks Ab Canada, about 2 hours east of Calgary on the Trans Canada highway. This would be drought country if it were not for the extensive irrigation
which was built by the contiental railwy which linked east to west in the early 1900's. Calgary is located in the foothills of the Rockies so it
gets sufficient railfall, sometimes too much! It is the home of the Calgary stampede. It's a rodeo contemporary entertainment & much more
I am anticipating the concert Oct 25/06
The concert Dec 8th/05 was awesome. His entrance from the back of the arena
was fantastic. By the time he reached
the stage, thw whole audience was held in his hand and all 23000 attendees knew we in for something special!! He is truly a Maestro beyond compare. I already have a few cd's & dvd's and am looking for more. I hope to find the Tuscany dvd @ barnes & Noble but that will have to wait until I go to Calgary
next. We have an Mtrax music channel on the digital network and they play many of the melodies of many artist
including Andre Rieu Never enough but I can pick out his violin from whever I am in my apartment. Hope the weather smiles on concert day & evening as Alberts can get a bit nasty at times
His cec/05 concert was in the middle of a chinook. It's a native American term meaning exceptional weather change. It can go from blizzard and 30 below to 10 above in just hours

Sally, do we all get a cake from Rosanna's Bakery? I want the one in the picture!
Reply to this
Hi Shirley: YES we do. And I would love to have one made special for you. Rosanna's cakes are the best in the county bar none. I would alternate by baking a home made cake on my girls actual birthdate for our home celebration, and then buying a cake for their birthday party with friends on a Saturday.
A Doll Cake for You! :
John & Bobby de Jong and I had a lunch (chat n chomp) here in Fairfield and then went by the bakery. Rosanna was there as was her husband Klaus.
We planned to have our next Fairfield Chat n Chomp at Rosanna's. Then The Daily Republic, printed this:::
FAIRFIELD - A prominent fixture in downtown Fairfield and the namesake behind Rosanna 's Bakery on Texas Street - Rosanna Jacobi - is terminally ill.
Jacobi , whose sunny personality would greet customers entering her bakery, is battling an incurable brain cancer, husband Klaus Jacobi said Tuesday. She is 63.
Rosanna resides at home under the care of her family and the local hospice.
Neighbors and friends who know the famous bakery duo say the Jacobi s offered customers more than sweet pastries.
Klaus and Rosanna Jacobi were married in Germany in 1963. They met in dancing school.
"She was a good dancer," Klaus said. "(I was) mediocre. I stepped on her foot and I guess that was the beginning of a love."
In 1964, the Jacobi s moved to Chicago. A few years later, they moved to San Francisco and entered a business partnership, working at Schubert's Bakery.
By 1971, the couple decided to launch their own business and the Baronial Bakery was born.
Like most entrepreneurs, the Jacobi s learned many hard lessons throughout their career.
They specialized in European pastries, cakes and cookies. They opened the Viennese Cake Box in San Francisco, a bakery at Geri-Towne Mall in Fairfield and through another business partnership opened smaller operations in San Mateo and Walnut Creek.
When they lost their lease in San Francisco, the Jacobi s struggled with making payments on their Fairfield bakery, which had moved into larger space on West Texas Street.
They eventually filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in April 1996, but never let go of their dream.
By September of that same year, they opened Rosanna 's Bakery in downtown Fairfield.
I can't imagine losing Rosanna . It just won't be the same."
New chapters
The Jacobi s this year planned to travel to Switzerland, where Rosanna was born in the Ticino region.
"I first have to overcome the loss of my best partner . . . I want to honor Rosanna 's wish to be strong."
~~~~~~~~~
One of the most difficult challenges facing any small business today is generating a positive response from the community for the products or services it provides.
Rosanna Jacobi led the charge in demonstrating that great customer service combined with a good product can create a legacy.
Rosanna and Klaus Jacobi first put their imprint of service excellence on the Fairfield community many years ago, and when business took a turn for the worse in 1995, they still managed to maintain their commitment to Fairfield.
The chronicle of Rosanna 's Bakery could be used as a case study in any American small business development handbook. Start a small business doing something you love while providing a product and service needed in a particular community. Next, market your business to enable growth and have the savvy to take on the challenges associated with a growing business.
Rosanna 's Bakery started its Fairfield career as a small bakery and pastry shop in Geri-Towne Mall.
With the growth of business during the booming 1990s, Rosanna 's Bakery opened a new 10,000-square-foot landmark building on West Texas Street that truly reflected the concept of the building as a cake. At its peak, Rosanna 's included the bakery and pastry shop along with a full menu restaurant and a wholesale bakery that distributed products to many businesses, including some in San Francisco.
When the overall business started struggling in the mid-1990s, Rosanna 's was forced to close its doors. However, this was not the end of the Rosanna 's story.
The city of Fairfield Economic Development staff met with Klaus and Rosanna Jacobi in 1995, before the business closed. Throughout the challenges facing them at the time, the Jacobi s committed to remaining in Fairfield for their residence and business.
With some technical assistance (business planning, marketing and business development) from the Solano College Small Business Development Center, the Downtown Improvement District and the city, Rosanna 's Bakery developed new strategies to better focus on the needs of the community. Rosanna 's downtown location was the result of these discussions and the commitment of the Jacobi s to Fairfield.
The current location for Rosanna 's Bakery on 1119 Texas Street opened in fall 1996. The business opened in a 1,400-square-foot storefront in a space that was vacant for more than a year before the Jacobi s took advantage of the opportunity the location provided. Opening at the new location was a challenge but the Jacobi s were assisted by the Mormon Church with free labor, Cunningham Design Conspiracy provided interior design services, Premier Commercial Real Estate provided leasing services, and the owner of the building provided tenant improvement dollars to assist in the installation of necessary new fixtures and equipment.
At their downtown location, Rosanna 's offered more than pastries and cakes, with sandwiches and lunch specials, scones and a variety of specialty goods that quickly developed a devoted following. (The business also expanded into the adjacent storefront space).
What made Rosanna 's Bakery a success was the passion and commitment of its hardworking owners, Rosanna and Klaus Jacobi . Their enthusiasm and commitment resulted in a unique business that filled a special niche in the local retail and food scene.
Rosanna Jacobi was an enthusiastic, confident, hard-working businesswoman and tangibly demonstrated that a small business - and a downtown storefront - are worth preserving. Thanks to her hard work, downtown Fairfield has a legacy business that under new ownership we hope will continue to inspire future entrepreneurs.
Rosanna Jacobi 's photo was installed on a light pole several years ago as part of a public art project in downtown Fairfield. It's located on the northeast corner of Texas Street at Madison Street. We hope it remains there for a long time as a commitment of thanks.
Economic Notes is an update from Fairfield City Hall written by Brian Miller and Karl Dumas of the Fairfield Planning and Development Department.
Marlene, I looked up the meaning of your name, most interesting. Here is what i found:
MARLENE
Gender: Feminine
Usage: German, English
Pronounced: MAHR-leen [key]
Blend of MARIA and MAGDALENE. Refers, therefore, to Mary Magdalene, a character in the New Testament. The name was first used by the German actress and singer Marlene Dietrich, whose real name was Maria Magdalene von Losch.
I have a soft spot in my heart and of course a great respect for Mary Magdalene, and I've always loved the name Maria. I know for a fact that I am German and English. I have referred people to Marlene Dietrich many times in reference to my name. This is all so very interesting to me. Why I never looked up my name before, probably was because I was afraid
I'm late in writing this in here, but, time, schedules and all that, keeps me from getting on these blogs as often as I wish. Anyway, thanks again Shirley, you made my day. Now, if I had read this after you posted it, then I would have had a fews extra "better days"!
Today is my birthday, but the year is not said aloud. I get younger each year, I started counting down from 100.
Happy Sunday everyone! After reading all the meanings of your names, I thought I would search "Barbara" /. . . hhhmmm . Barbara: origin Greek and Latin . . . Meaning: foreign, strange, exotic, mysterious. Well, not everyone lives up to their name, right Barb Wilson? hahaha
Reply to this
hi Barb!
Well, you don't seem really strange! Even though I've never seen you, I feel like I've known you, and all these fans for years! You know, we're all friends.....Andre Rieu Fans!!!
Sarah
Reply to this
Hi Sarah! No, I do not feel strange. That is why I mentioned Barb Wilson and I do not live up to our name. Neither of us is "strange". "Mysterious" at times. hahaha Yup, Andre Rieu Fans are super! I watched "The Homecoming" on our PBS station today. Watching his DVD's now give me an urgency to BE THERE! I am really sad he will not be coming to Dallas/Ft. Worth in 2007. But hey, it gives me an opportunity to visit another city and meet new fans. You see Sarah. Andre's live concerts are addictive, right Fans? Once you get to see a live concert you are MORE than hooked! He's the greatest and I am so happy I found him two years ago.
Hi Barb, NO...you & the other Barb are the least"strange" people I ever met.I think the world would be much better off if it had more Barbs like you two!maybe by saying "strange", it means unique. That would fit!
hello ladies and gentlemen!
Let's share our most favorite names, other than our own. I think one of my favorite names is Rebecca or Becky (same thing). If I would have kids, I would probobly name each one after someone, or something. For example: Sierra Nevada. Sierra would be a pretty name! I think names that have meanings have so much more value, than ordinary names. I hope I didn't hurt anybody's feelings. Just expressing my opinions!
thank you,
Sarah
I guess I was born in a snowstorm because I HATE the cold. I was born in Lancaster, Pa. which is 10 miles from the great sweet town of Hershey! Love and hugs
For some reason I had never read down this birthday list before. My birthday is January 2 (Missed New Year's by three hours). Was born in a small hospital in rural Maine. I was the only baby in the nursery and the nurses kept me in the incubator, not because I was in trouble, but because it was nice and warm!
Personally, my birthday is January 12, 1965.
This is the same day exactly as the death of Lorraine Hansberry. She wrote, "Raisin in the Sun". She also wrote an array of other human rights related broadway plays and books. Lorraine died January 12, 1965 of pancreatic cancer at age 34.
