Girl with Pearl Earring
I have just found a fabulous website regarding Johannes Vermeer's
Girl With A Pearl Earring.

Does anyone else have information on this?
Have you seen the painting?
Been to the Vermeer museum?
Here are a few sites to review:

What I know about Vermeer is absolutely nothing! But I have seen the picture of the Girl With A Pearl Earring.Lorraine, isn't this the print you were talking about getting? I did find out a bit about some of his paintings:"A painting is a world without change and without sound. Vermeer's paintings, instead, are full of musical instruments and people making music. In almost one third of his paintings, music is present in one way or another".I thought that was interesting. Also remember the fact that Marc Rieu is also a painter. In the dvd of Welcome to My World, we see some of his paintings.I'm familiar with only one Dutch artist & that would be van Gogh.I'd be interested in any information about this particular painting. I love the colors.
Did you know there is a dvd, Girl With a Pearl Earring, on Amazon? It's a story about this painting.
Hi Sally,
I have seen the original painting "Girl with pearl earring" for it is in the museum (Mauritshuis) in The Hague, the city where I live. It is magnificent! I also have seen the movie/DVD. This painting has been elected as the most beautiful painting of the Netherlands. Besides Johannes Vermeer we have another famous Dutch painter in the picture this year: Rembrandt van Rijn was born 400 years ago, exactly on July 15th!! Andre on stage in Maastricht and me in the concert! Have you ever heard of Rembrandt???
Hi Ineke: How Exciting to see the original painting. I love it's simple elegance, yet in depth drama and complexities of life.
I am thinking of you as you see Andre and get to meet Ruth Morgan and all the Rieu Girlzzzzzzzzz again.

Dear Sally Chaney,
Here's a particularly nice piece of news for my Italian subscribers: Vermeer's "Love Letter" is now in Rome (luckily, 25 minutes walk from where I happen to live). At the Barberini Gallery, you will find no special exhibition, no comparative works, no catalogue and naturally, no new hypothesis about Vermeer's art. This rare situation has one positive side: there are no crowds and no lines to stand in (at least, until the national press catches on). All this means that the painting can be comfortably viewed among the exquisite Italian works of the Barberini's permanent collection. And although the Dutch/Italian juxtaposition was entirely unintentional, it provides ample food for thought. Don't hesitate to let me know yours if you have the chance to see the picture.

As I stood looking at the paintings, I tried to imagine Rembrandt as he painted. What was the world like then? What else was happening in his life at that time? His country?
YES SHIRLEY! You are right....The Girl with the Pearl Earring is the focal point of my dining area...i will take another photo (lost all my good ones on my laptop which crashed)...if someone tells me how to put the photos on here...i will post it for you all...
I love the painting. I believe originally it was called "The Girl with The Turban"....LOVE VERMEER...and REMBRANDT...having lived in Amsterdam and worked in Holland (Elsevier Publishing Company)...I love everything Dutch and always will...there is a coziness that belongs to the Dutch that the Germans, or Swedes (my dad was German...my dear sister-in-law and my best friend Swedish so i'm not dissing them...love them too) but....there is a coziness in Holland that is Unique...it is such a feeling that cannot be duplicated anywhere else...i have tried to make my little dining room have a touch of that...when time permits..and with much instruction...i'll share my painting with all of you...i lived very near the Rijks Museum when i lived and worked in Holland...so wonderful...and the Concertgebow...oh my! loverly, L
As the genius Disney said: It's A Small World After All. I long to see other countries and peoples. If I had the funds to do so, I'd travel all the time.
I enjoy your observations and writings. Thank you for sharing them.
thank you Sally! when i was younger i loved to travel. at the time i turned 21 they had the "youth fare" program. the round trip ticket to europe was about $200.00...and then a eurail pass for six months was maybe $200 or less. it was wonderful...one could stay at a youth hostile very inexpensively. i did just that. having relatives in Sweden, Germany and Italy, i had it made. i loved the trip. these days i've become more of an "armchair" travelor via pbs, the internet, and memories...that's gotta change...don't you all think so?
does anyone know where to get a two region dvd. my brother purchased a great one for only $59.00 at radio shack with a "Dual" lable...RS doesn't sell them anymore...
Hi Lorraine: No Sony's play PAL. So they are out. One Andre Fan wrote me he found one on sale at Walmart, so he bought it, yet another did the Best Buy thing.
My DVD player plays both, but I watch most DVDs on my computer.
Ruth has a dual player, I forget the brand..
We have an Apex AD-500W that plays both, we got it at Wal-Mart a few years back.
I do have a Philips DVD player/recorder, play both system PAL and NTSC, no problem. Kati
thank you everyone! i will try all of your recommendations! happy fourth (again!),L....
Hi, and thanks to all of you for the information about "Girl With the Pearl Earring". Totally a new and thrilling story for me and I have just rented the movie of the same title. (Netflix) Until it arrives, I will enjoy the fireworks of Andre's music and DVDs. This is such a good place to find new people and enjoy their contributions. Happy Fourth to all as we enjoy our freedoms. Cheers, Barb
If you are interested in the paining of Girl with the pearl earring (also called girl with turban), go to www.mauritshuis.nl. That is the museum in The Hague. Click on the painting "Vermeer in stereo" and you'll get a free tour. You can choose English language. Have fun!! Ineke.
Thank you, I did go there. The painting is even more beautiful on that site. and the 17th century palace is very beautful also. the architcture is outstanding!
Hi Ineke: That is a great suggestion. I went to the website and loved it.
Just last night I opened my mail and Presto! From Mr. McMurray - the video The Girl with the Pearl Earring.
It will be on my watch this weekend list.
Barb or Sally, have you watched the movie yet? What were your impressions?
I finally went to the library & checked this out. I was very impressed with the scenes, every scene seemed to be a painting. And didn't Scarlett look exactly like the girl in the painting? I will watch this again just to look at all the scenes once more.this time I will use pause a lot just to enjoy the scene.
