SILVESTER PUNSCH....A Review of the DVD

I thought I had all of Andre's DVD's until I received an email from someone, whose name escapes me.  This person detailed to me a song & dance of Carmen that I'd never seen.

Soooo, I went back to Andre's website, & sure enough there was a dvd Silvester Punsch, that I didn't have.  I do have Silvester Wien, filmed in Vienna  & had always thought they were one & the same DVD.

When I carefully checked the list of song/composition titles on the 2 DVD's; it was there & then I ordered Silvester Punsch, a DVD filmed  in 2004 in Hanover, Germany.

I received Silvester Punsch this past weekend & have watched/listened to it 4 or 5 times.

Indeed, Carmen did sing & dance like nothing I've ever seen her do before.

All the music is full of life & spirit, but what I really liked was seeing the orchestra members do things, & play instruments out of their norm.

The 4 members of the choir all played instruments.  I should mention I don't know the names of the choir members so I'm hoping someone can fill in their names.  Heidi is the only choir member I can put a name to.  On this DVD, Heidi, played the Trombone in Tea For Two, a number where all the male orchestra members do a slow dance in formal black & white tux.  Only the female orchestra members played instruments.  Heidi had a couple of passages where she was clearly the lead instrument in the musical number.  Two other choir members played trumphets at the same time during the same Tea For Two song.  1 choir member (Nicole?) played chimes right at the beginning & looked so pleased with herself for having the spotlight solely on her.

In another number with Russell Watson, Carla played the lead guitar & strummed the instrument with a polished touch.

And finally, Heidi again was called out by Manoe to come down out of the choir, to join her in a sprited Clarinet duet, KlarinettenmucklHeidi, played the clarinet in a v-e-r-y fast paced number that clearly revealed her superb skill.

And the 3 Soprano's, Carmen, Carla, & Suzan, excelled in an oriental aria entitled, Im Salon zur blauen Pagode that revealed their collective stunning stage presence, dancing & acting skills.

This DVD has things I've not seen before, along with Russell Watson, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I only wish I knew the names of the other 3 choir members.  Can anyone help me out?

"Adieu mein kleiner Gardeoffizier" is one of my favorite songs, it is part of this DVD, 100 Years of Strauss  DVD, & the most recent DVD in Sch...........

I found the German lyrics & am going to learn them so I can sing along in German if the concert here in Phoenix includes it. Here are the German lyrics:

Adieu mein kleiner Gardeoffizier (Little Captain of My Heart)

Adieu mein kleiner Gardeoffizier, Adieu, Adieu
    Und vergiss mich nicht
    Und vergiss mich nicht
Adieu mein kleiner Gardeoffizier, Adieu, Adieu
    Sei das Glück mit dir
    Sei das Glück mit dir

    Stehe gerade, kerzengerade
    Lache in den Sonnentag
    Was immer gescheh'n auch mag
Hast du Sorgenminen, fort mit ihnen
    Ta-ta-ra-ta-ta
    Für Trübsal sind andere da

Adieu mein kleiner Gardeoffizier, Adieu, Adieu
    Und vergiss mich nicht
    Und vergiss mich nicht
Adieu mein kleiner Gardeoffizier, Adieu, Adieu
    Sei das Glück mit dir
    Sei das Glück mit dir
Adieu, Adieu mein kleiner Offizier, Adieu

A couple of other observations I've noticed about Silvester Punsch:

"Im Salon zur blauen Pagode" where Carmen, Carla & Suzan sing an asian aria. At the end of the number, Chop Choy comes out & cleans up the stuff left by Kim, Mo, & No (kimmono). Look closely at Chop Choy, he will appear in the very next musical number "Bahn frei", as "The Conductor".

"Bahn frei" is a spirited catchy tune that includes a lot of smoke, special effects. Watch this musical number closely; Linda Custers the tall blond Viola player in a blue gown,  will be completely engulfed in the smoke. You'll notice Andre notices Linda has disappeared in the smoke &, in fact, walks across the stage & tries to look through the smoke trying to find Linda; to no avail he leaves with a silly grin on his face now realizing the special effects that have engulfed Linda.

Did you notice the train conductor is the same person as Chop Choy in the previous number?

In the very last number, "Marina" when the camera showed the crowd up by the stage, I noticed a young lady that looked familiar. Sure enough when I looked at the DVD 100 years of Strauss, she was in the crowd in that DVD also. The young lady is wearing a blouse, square cut in front, the blouse is trimmed in red & green. Her eyes are looking for the camera; I think she is hoping she will appear in the crowd in the DVD also. I wonder who she is & whether we'll see her again in another German DVD.

BTW, does anyone know the name of the female violin player that wears a violet gown, she sits right in the middle of the orchestra & is frequently seen immediately behind & over Andre's shoulder.

This female violin player is standing, along with Frank during "Adieu, mein kleiner Gardeoffizier".

This same violinist appears in the same position in the orchestra during the "Flying Dutchman" DVD.

Renata is playing the bassoon during this DVD & I think this is the only DVD she doesn't stand out.

Did you notice the high overhead camera angle of Heidi, during the "Klarinettenmuckl", The clarinet duet? The sharp eye of the cameraman captured her unique movements of keeping time to the music , something I've not seen before, or since, from Heidi. (giggle)

the guy that appeared as "Chop Choy" & the "Conductor", also appeared a 3rd time; he is the person pushing the xylophone out onstage for Marcel during the "Zircus Renz"

Also, during the "Adieu" number, look over at Carmen, look at the expression on her face, the 2nd time Ruud, the trombone player, goes into his improptu dance----it is a look of disbelief from Carmen, that is priceless.

          Hi Bill,

You are correct in your sightings of this guy as Chop Choy and the Conductor. I have a third sighting for you. If you really want a good look at what he looks like, he was in the Dublin DVD. He carried Carla Mafioletti onto the stage when she did the Song of Olympia as the puppett. This guy was the one who had to keep "winding her up".

I too very recently found this wonderful DVD. It has become one of my favorites. I love the number with Ki, Mo & No. That was superb three-part women's harmony. The Tea for Two number is really good too.

If you don't have it, I would also recommend the Gala Concert. It had a few unusual things on it.

          You have an excellent observation.

Regarding your questions about the choir, the blond girl that is tall and favors Suzan in the face (to me anyway) is more beautiful in Vienna than ever before. She is in just about every Andre DVD is own. She rings the chime in the Tea for Two number.

          Hope this information proves helpful.

You really think alike. My favorite number was the clog dance and that last number with Manoe and Renate. One other really good number was when the girls were gone and the men started pouring champagne, playing cards, etc. The men looked sad whent he girls got back and Andre says "We've been missing you." That was FUNNY.

I bought GALA and Punsch at the same time and I have to be careful not to confuse which one is which.
