Spelling & Punctuation Police

Gather round boys & girls, class is now in session.

We’re all great fans of André & his J. Strauß music.  And each one of us know most orchestra members by their names including Noël, Joëlle, & René.

I thought it would be a wonderful tribute to all those we love if we all learn the keyboard shortcuts so we can properly spell their names.

Sooo, by the power vested with me I hereby declare this Blog to be a mis-spell free zone <g>

After today, I have it on good authority the Punctuation Police will begin issuing citations for mis-spellings <g>

And everyone on this Blog is hereby deputized to issue citations to offenders by replying to the post/reply that is missing the needed accents & umlauts & verbally chastising said person.

The keyboard shortcuts are very easy:

Umlauts ===ctrl+shift+: + the letter

ß---ctrl+shift+&, s

accents over a letter á----ctrl + ‘, the letter

Now go to your desks, boys & girls it’s time for you to test your new found keyboard skills.

You have 3 test questions:

  1. compose a sentence using a word containing an umlauts?
  2. compose a sencence using a word containing an accent
  3. compose a sentence using the word Strauß

and do so in a reply to this post. <g>

btw, the above keyboard shortcuts only work in a word document which must then be copy & pasted into your reply on this blog.

Now if I can only catch Webmaster Sally in an infraction <g>

Bill in Arizona now scurries for cover under a nearby rock hoping to avoid the unruly mob behavior & possible neck tie party (grinning from ear to ear & in the throes of uncontrolled hysterical laughter)

              Kati, Pippi Longstockings,is a fictional character...maybe you will know her in Hungarian as:Harisnyás Pippi"
              Pippi is the invention of her Swedish author who recently died, Astrid Lindgren...Pippi was my hero and still is in a way...she did her own thing.
              Here is a little Pippi write-up i found:
              Efraim's Daughter Longstocking (in the Swedish original Pippilotta Viktualia Rullgardina Krusmynta Efraimsdotter Långstrump). Her fiery red hair is worn in braids that are so tightly wound that they stick out sideways from her head.

              Pippi lives alone with her monkey, Mr. Nilsson, and her horse, Old Man, in an old house named Villa Villekulla, located in a small Swedish village. Her friends and next-door neighbors, Tommy and Annika Settergren, accompany her on her adventures; though the children's mother disapproves of Pippi's sometimes coarse manners and lack of education, Mrs. Settergren knows that Pippi would never put Tommy and Annika in harm's way, and that Pippi values her friendship with the pair above nearly all else in her life.

              Though lacking in much formal education, Pippi is very intelligent in a common-sense fashion, and has a well-honed sense of justice and fair play. She will show respect (though still in her own unique style) for adults who treat her and other children fairly. Her attitude towards the worst of adults (from a child's viewpoint) is often that of a vapid, foolish and babblemouthed child, and few of her targets realize just how sharp and crafty Pippi is until she's made fools of them. Pippi has an amazing talent for spinning lies and tall tales, though they are usually in the form of humorously strange stories rather than lying with malicious intent.

              Pippi is the daughter of seafarer Efraim Longstocking, captain of the sailing ship Hoptoad, from whom Pippi inherited her common sense and incredible strength, being the only person known who can match Pippi in physical ability. Captain Longstocking originally bought Villa Villekulla to give his daughter a more stable home life than that on shipboard (though Pippi loves the seafaring life, and is indeed a better sailor and helmswoman than most of her father's crew). Pippi retired to the Villa after her father was believed lost at sea, determined that her father was still alive and would come to look for her there.

              As it turned out, Captain Longstocking was washed ashore upon a South Sea island known as Kurrekurredutt Isle, where he was made the "fat white chief" by its native people. The Captain returned to Sweden to bring Pippi to his new home in the South Seas, but Pippi found herself attached to the Villa and her new friends Tommy and Annika, and decided to stay where she was, though she and the children sometimes took trips with her father aboard the Hoptoad, including a trip to Kurrekurredutt where she was confirmed as the "fat white chief"'s daughter, Princess Pippilotta...

    Yes, I know the keyboard shortcuts work in "WORD". that is the only word processing system I've ever worked in. I'll now expand the shortcut instructions :

    to Add an accent mark above a letter:

    Press <ctrl>with one finger & hold it down
    Press the <apostrophe> key & hold it down
    Release both keys simultaneously
    Now press <the letter> key you want the accent mark to appear above.

    umlauts:
    press <ctrl> with one finger & hold;
    Press <shift> with one finger & hold;
    Press the <Colon> key with one finger;
    Now release all 3 keys simultaneously;
    Now press <the letter> key you want an oomlat to appear above....viola an umlaut is now above the letter

        ‘Miss Katalin, take this test paper & go back to your seat. You have only answered 2 of the 3 test questions.

        #3 compose a sentence using the word Strauß

        You’ve made great strides at improving your punctuations marks, Miss Katalin, but until you demonstrate your skill on the 3rd test question all you have earned is an incomplete!

        Perhaps your example up to this point will serve to inspire & encourage others become proficient & accurate spellers using the accent marks. Surely you have a sense of accomplishment & feelings of elation when it worked for the first time.
