This is a picture taken with my old Canon T-90 with a very powerful macro lens. These lenses are usually used to photograph things like postage stamps and the like but I used it on this guy so as not to rile him. Didn't work, though, as I ended up getting profoundly stung for my troubles!

    2. Wish I could find the photo my oldest daughter took when she was 2 years old. She wanted to take pictures, so I bought her a disposable camera, told her to stand "Real Still" and showed her the button to press. Her first photo was of Grandpa.

She stood still. The photo was very clear. It was a perfect photo of Grandpa's Knees.

Seeing Andre looking right at you, would be incredibly exciting, Jeanine Ann, I don't know how you could keep from getting a blurry picture...you have more composure than I would have had at that moment. Plan great photos
Today's smart cameras are no substitute for basic techniques. Here are plenty of tips for shooting better photographs

    Steve Makris, The Edmonton Journal
    Published: Saturday, June 30, 2007

Your eye still rules in photography today.

It doesn't matter if you spent thousands for the best professional digital camera or 10 bucks for a basic disposable film camera.

It all comes down to when and how you take the photo that matters.

Even today's smartest cameras won't tell you when to take that great picture.

Good photography means being ready to shoot and open to new ideas.

Compared to film, with digital cameras you can take a lot more pictures.

But that can be a disadvantage if you don't take the time to plan your photo.

Here are a few tips on getting better photos with any camera.

    TRAVEL

    - Check pictures in brochures and online sites of places you plan to visit.

    - Blog sites often have helpful information from other travellers. Search your destination on Google and include words like great pictures or photo.

    - When there, scout out sites to re-visit at different times of the day. A sunrise, noon or evening photo of the same scene can be dramatically different.

    - When returning to your hotel, walk the other side of the road or take a different path.

    - Review your digital pictures when resting.

    - Make conversation with other travelling photographers.

    - Shoot anything -- objects of interest, road and store signs.

Years later they can bring back fond memories.

    AT HOME

    - Have a camera handy and ready 24/7.

    - It's hard to photograph teens; get them their own camera, even a one-time-use.

    - Group photography doesn't have to be boring.

Shoot from higher up or from a low angle, and get some folks closer to your camera.

    Think 3D.

    ANY TIME BASICS

    - Look at other's photos online and in photo magazines.

    - Camera makers often have helpful online hints on photography, such as:

    - Practise, practise, practise ... digital film is free!

    - Look at a picture in the mirror, or flip it on your PC screen ... it gives you a new critical perspective.

    - Digital memory is dirt cheap. It's better to leave the photo quality setting on high than have a small, unusable picture.

For the price of a five-roll film pack you can buy half a gigabyte of memory, enough to take twice the number of photos ... forever. Don't rely on one huge memory card, instead use more, smaller ones.

    - Experiment with light. Switch points of view or turn flash on and off.

    - Place subject on side of photo, leaving lot's of room for the background to show.

Most cameras let you lock the focus by keeping the shutter button pressed half way.

    - If you like the photo you just took, snap a few more frames.

    - Steady your shot.
  • June 30, 2007 Al Girard wrote:
Don't jerk the camera downward when you shoot.

Support the camera with your left hand from the bottom, not the sides.

    TRICKY PHOTOS

Digital cameras come with several or dozens of scene modes, each with automatic settings to technically get the best exposure.

Even pros take advantage of firework settings, long nighttime exposure with flash, shooting active children, museum settings, white sandy beach scenes and more.

Otherwise, its best to take several frames at different settings, at least with and without flash.

    MOST COMMON MISTAKES

    - Aiming the camera at someone's head, leaving lots of sky above and no feet below is a no no.

Compose carefully and keep heads on upper part of your camera viewfinder.

    - Positioning folks far away from the camera to get "all of them" in the photo.

Get them to move closer and just shoot from the waist up, still keeping the same background scene.

    GOOD CAMERAS MATTER

    - Fujifilm's new 8.3-megapixel F40fd, $350, can track multiple faces in a group picture and properly expose.

It can even quickly zoom in to each face after, lest someone blinked. It excels at shooting in natural light and includes a unique two quick-frame mode, taking one frame in natural light and the other with flash -- nice.

    - Kodak's Easyshare eight-megapixel V803, $230, has more than 20 automatic scene settings to make sure tricky photos turn out.

Its Perfect Touch Technology fixes photos and let's you crop them before you print at home or a photo lab.

Even serious digital SLR cameras are packed with features to help beginners. The 10-megapixel Olympus E-510, $999, is unique, featuring full-screen preview to help you compose your photo and mechanical anti-shake technology that literally follows your movements, keeping the photo sharp. It's ample scene selection enables beginners to get good photos from the first snap.

    CAMERA PHONES

Most cellphones with cameras take poor quality pictures, worse than Polaroids. New two- and-three-megapixel models are better, but the odds of getting anything better than a web-quality photo are against you.

    - Shoot full frame, getting close to your subject. Look for models that feature "flash" light for dark scenes.

    - Camera phones with zoom shoot progressively worse quality photos as you zoom in. Keep camera at a wide view and walk closer to the subject.

    - Use the highest quality picture settings the phone allows.

    - Photos you send to other phones or e-mail are downsized to even lower quality. To keep the original photo quality of better camera phones, e-mail them as an attachment (your cellphone bill might jump) or copy them to your PC on your return.

Manheim..........the first time our eyes met in daylight, something passed between us. He was the third dog I had raised for Canine Companions for Independence. He arrived from California in the middle of the night. he was raised to be a Service Dog, but as his hips were not good he was released from the program and we kept him. He was the ultimate dog, we did a little of everything, he did a TV program on Flyball that he loved but was physically unable to do in competition. He spent most of his life doing school dog safety presentations, and careers days, he loved that. He did his last one about a month before he died.
Now we are raising pup # 10 Glory the German Shepherd. Once you are a puppy raiser you can never turn back. You have to continue, it is a part of your life.
An old experienced Border Collie trainer and handler once told me that they are a part of your soul. I lost Manheim and his younger (unrelated) 'brother' Havoc who worked as a registered Therapy Dog with me at work helping troubled teens three weeks earlier, so it has been very hard on us. But we have our Labrador 'Maude' who also works as a therapy dog with me, and Glory.
We just have to enjoy every minute of our precious pets, they are just on loan to us for a short while.
Oh goodness it is Saturday night, I did not intend this to be a gloomy message.
Just look around and find your pets and give them a big hug from 'Manheim' and 'Havoc' while you are at it, do the same with your family too!

I could not do what you do Wendy, and although it's very commendable, I could not give up a dog, because I just fall in love with all of them.
I've had many dogs in my life, never have given any away, lost too many from old age or sicknesses...had one special little dog which I'm going to see again someday, she's waiting for me. If you get them on a CD I reccomend you copy them to another CD as a back up and also save them on your computer hard drive.
        I hope this helps,
        Wendy

Wendy, you like animals and have a good eye for catching the right moment. Your story about Mannheim got tears in my eyes, you are soooo right, we have to enjoy every moment with our pets. My 3 cats are now the most photo objects I have, I used to have 5 cats, all rescued from the streets. We love them all, but is so hard to part with them.

One of my favorite photos, for the beauty it gives to my heart. I was but 4 years old when I found out God Lived On My Block. That is a mighty powerful bell in the steeple.

I love the story here. When we first moved to a new town my brother went exploring the new neighborhood. He came running into the house shouting, Granny, i've found us a new church & it's got the best name. It's called the "SCARED HEART"! Naturally it was the Sacred Heart.

Wow Sally, this picture sure does bring back memories for me. I was born in California and it will always be a part of my life, I guess. This picture sure brings back that "California-feel" for me. Isn't this a beautiful church? Yes, Sally, I do believe that God does live on your block!

I will never forget hearing that bell early one morning. I followed the sound, going through the back yard, through Billy's front yard and seeing the bell swinging. I knocked on the door and loud voice said it was open to come in. But I knew I could not just walk in. So I knocked again and a tall man in a black robe answered the door. I asked "Who is ringing the bell and who's house is this"? To which he opened his arms in a wide sweeping manner holding them stretched out and said "This is God's House".

That was the coolest thing I ever heard. God Lived On My Block

I found the picture of Jutta, this picture was taken with an old camera, I use it still, it is now over 4O years old, but has a good lens, but all is manual, no automatic on it. That is why it was so difficult to catch Jutta in flight, mostly she jumped right out of my picture, it would be easier now-a-days with a digital camera. She is lO years old, notice her tongue is sticking out, haaaaaaaaa! Inge

What a smart 4 year old and a lovely little church, Sally! We have been yesterday at a Golden Wedding Anniversary of my brother-in-law and his wife, the children told anecdotes from the age of 4 and one of them was , the oldest boy was sitting in the unfinished barn under the rafters and it started raining very strong, but he sat under a beam and did not get wet, he thought his father up in the clouds was protecting him, everything around him got wet.

Aren't children's ideas great. We have a friend whose little boy was very scared of thunder, so she told him it was only God bowling. one day, after a particularly loud clap of thunder her son said Momma, God must have got a strike!

    Inge,
I loved your story about Maastricht. How did you know Pierre and Suzan's house? Are you sure Andre bought that church?? We did not know that! Did n't you mix up the two watermills in Maastricht? The inside of the Bisschopsmill and the outside of the Lions Mill? At present there are two watermills left in Maastricht.
    Love,
    Ineke.

Ineke, those two horses are just the most beautiful animals, if I could afford a horse or the place to hold one, I would love to have one, they are smart, beautiful and graceful. You are very lucky!

What you write about the 2 mills??? You could be right, that I mix two together, haaaaaaaa! But the story about the church I still have the article from a paper in Germany. About the houses from Pierre and Marc, a lady that lives next to André with the little dog "Beauty" she told us that, an other friend from Germany who was already a few times in Maastricht, she told me too, that the long white house is Pierre´s, so I write what other people told me, but I think a neighbor of André knows who lives next to her, don´t you think so?
  • July 1, 2007 Ineke wrote:
O Inge, that is very interesting. Yes, the neighbor must know for sure who is living next to her! What a great idea to rent a bicycle and to ride to the studios, which are outside the center of Maastricht.

Interesting how everyone has a different technique. I am not a photographer but sure would love to become one! QUESTION...do any of you photographers know where one can take a photograph and have it put onto a larger size canvass (maybe 4' by 6'...)? I really want to have an ocean shot put onto canvass for my foyer. If anyone has any ideas please advise. More photos.....more photos...it is a way in which to really get to know more about all of you! L

Lorraine, you could try to get it printed by laser. I needed tiny crests for my miniature Viennese Choir boys for their sailor blouses, I took a picture from a program of one of their concerts and got it laser printed on a hanky from my husband and so I cut them out and glued them on the blouses. i hope that helps??
