Andre Rieu in Vienna by Ruth Morgan
After attending the concerts in Maastricht, Ruth & Jim Morgan along with Ineke Cornelissen took a train to Vienna for more festivities.
Travel with Ruth as she shares her trip to Vienna via photographs.
Andre Rieu in Vienna ~ July 14, 2007
Jim and I just got home from Europe where we had a great time at 2 concerts in Maastricht and a free dress rehearsal and concert in Vienna. The Vienna concert was different from the one in Maastricht and will be aired on ZDF in Germany, Holland, etc. on August 11th. Ineke and I did standing ovations a lot and
waved my homemade André Rieu scarf in Vienna!

What a great looking group you are.
You guys look happier than I have seen anyone look. What nice photos. Thank you Ruth. Hugs to all of you
Here we are having a nice dinner in Vienna before the dress rehearsal of the concert at the restaurant named in the photo above. The names of the people from left to right are Jim Morgan, Dorli Senn, Ineke Cornelissen, Ruth Morgan, and Dan Lycan, (Dan the Banner Man). The photo was taken by our waiter. This is the exact place that was in the Schronbrunn concert with the JSO sitting together enjoying wine, and Andre has the dog on his lap.
I like this photo. It is always good to have Fans getting together for Fun!
André signed the ceiling
Who else put their name on the ceiling?
Where is the ceiling? And how high is it? And how do you get up there to sign?
They probably have a very hight ladder! What fun!! I know how Ruth got her name on! Hugs
Oh Ruth I didn't mean you were on the ladder to put your name on. I thought you put it on with your computer before you sent it to Sally.
I didn't sign the ceiling near Andre's autograph. Sally put it on the photo.
Hi Ruth, when You made this signature picture, You did not know, that Marika Rokk's signature is right on it!? Go, see just a little bit to the right from your name, there it is. I just noticed it Today! Kati
Csardasfürstin Marika Rökk
I love this video! My goodness, if that's the way csardas is supposed to be danced, then Kati, I'm afraid I could never conquer that one!
Shirley, the show You have seen, is really happening just in Operettas, very professional way. The everyday Csardas is so much easier, does not have to be perfect, just move on the rythm of the music. One day I will teach You , and You will see. I do not know all these fancy steps either! Naturally stepdance is not part of a Csardas! Kati
The first photo is a tented area behind a fence where the JSO enjoyed the buffet dinners prior to the concerts, and it was at the rear of the building in the next photo. The second photo is a view of the stage and the platform of chairs for the audience in Michaelerplatz with a portion of the Hofburg Palace in the background. This was the residence of Kaiser Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth, also known as Sisi.
This is a great photo! Thank you for sharing. Hugs
This statue of Johanne Strauss with me and Ineke is located in the City Park in Vienna.
Wath a beautiful picture!!
I didn´t know that he had a statuate so wonderful like that!!!
It´s so cool that we have any chance to see Andre in my country...
kisses
Elisangela, soon you will have photos with your friends to share!
Thank you dear...
I don´t know how to post photos...what can I do?
kisses
Oh my goodness Ruth. You must have known I wanted one like this! Thanks and love
Yes, this is a great picture!
I don't know why but I keep coming back to look at this photo
These are photos of the dancers during the concerts. The stage was built with wings on each side on which the dancers performed.
Our Train was Traveling 300 km/hr!
These are photos taken by Jim on the train from Frankfurt to Munich, Germany on the way to Salzburg. It was a very fast train as you can see on the monitor. It was a long ride so I provided my portable DVD player with earphones for both Ineke and myself, and we watched at least 3 DVDs to make the trip very enjoyable. The Hotel du Casque kitchen packed lunches for us for our trip. Nice, huh? Occasionally, we looked at the view of the green rolling hills of the countryside with little towns of white houses with red tile roofs. You can see that it's blurry outside the window because of our speed.
Must have been a beautiful experience! Through the contry side! Kati
I want to ride on the Zippy Train!
Great pictures Ruth! Thanks for sharing!
I really love this structure. The paintings of the Horses are beautiful. Do you know the name of this or it's history?
And who is this?Would this be "my guy" MOZART?
BINGO. Shirley I thought of you when I saw this. Thought it would look good on your tree. I wonder if they had an orniment of Strauß.
(thanks for the easy oooommmlaaates Julie!)
Yes, Shirley, you are right. This is a Christmas tree ornament of Mozart. I didn't buy one because I was sure it would break in my luggage.
What a fantastic vacation you had!Love the pictures, thank you.
Beautiful pictures Ruth, Thanks for sharing! Kati
Ruth I have seen on the ceiling not far from you and André in the Griechen Beisle the signature from Marika Rökk, she was one of the most famous revue stars in Germany and Austria , Hungarian born, she was still swirling over the stage in Countess Mariza from Emmerich Cálman in her 60s, she is now in her 8Os and I saw her in my very first movie as a 6 year old and went back in the movie 6 times, the title was "Frau meiner Träume": Woman of my dreams, so you two are in good company!!!
Being Hungarian, I was way to Youn g to know Her, seldom seen pictures of Her. I did know Her name and profession, but She left Hungary very early in time, never experienced the Communist regime, lucky for Her, and with Her beautiful voice, She was able to make a wonderful Profession for Herself.Became World fanous! Kati
Thank you for the information about Marika's signature on the ceiling. If I had known about her, I would have looked for her signature and photographed it.
It is OK Ruth, next year I will go my self, and make the picture. I hope, there will be a Concert in Vienna also! Kati
Yum. Loved these pictures. Is the Griechen Beisle the place where Mozart used to hang out?
Kati, Marika Rökk was mainly a dancer but she also sang, but not like Carla or Carmen.
She married Georg Jacobi and had only one daughter Gabi, but she staid married to one man, he was about 2O years her senior and a film director. From her I have my love for Czardas and Hungarian temperament. I also loved how she spoke with that Hungarian accent.
Yes, I do knoe Inge, that She was in Operettas most, and basically She been rescued by Her Husband, from the upcoming Communist regime, Lucky, that this way Her Talent could flourish, and been succesful, outside of Hungary. Otherwise, opportunities like this were rear! Maybe I will show You a few steps of Csardas, next year, when I will attend the Maastricht Concert and Vienna, if there is going to be one!! We can sing the csardas songs together! Kati
Kati, maybe you can send us the lyrics or a link to them? It would be fun to have them.
Kati, as far as I know, Marika Rökk was in Austria before the Communists ever came to Hungary, she was there during the war and made movies in Germany, as a child her parents took her to the US to become a star, but they came back, it did not work.
If we meet in Maastricht, I do not know, perhaps in Vienna??? I always wanted to see André and his JSO in Vienna because of the music and his connection to Johann Strauß, Vienna the City of dreams! That is what it says on my scrap book from André, I bought it there.
Wow. This was style! I am so happy to be learning about Markia.
Marika Rökk Hallo Janine

Thanks Sally, I have never seen any pictures of Her, I just knew, She was in Austria and Germany. Kati
Kati, she is very pretty isn't she? And I love those dance numbers. Seems she had plenty of cute co-stars as well. I can see it now. I am at the Library, checking out videos where I will not understand the words! But I'll still watch and with all things of good quality, I think I will be able to gain an understanding via the music, dances and facial expressions.
AHA! Now I know who she looks like! remember Jean Harlow? This picture looks a lot like her(IMO). Although they were nothing alike, they do resemble each other facially.
Hi Ho Ruth....you look marvelous dawling! Travel agrees with you. Thanks for the photos of the train and Vienna concert. I think this is every Andre fan's dream. Such a gorgeous venue..... And, you are now in the elite company of Johann and his statue. Where was Andre when you need him for a photo. I'm curious to know if the music was new and different from Schonbrun. Does the USA have a hotel that would prepare a lunch for their guests??? Ineke, you look like the perfect traveling companion...all smiles. I love watching all that you and bring to us who are sitting with their computer waiting for the latest photos and stories. I so enjoy your generous contribution to the site. Ruth,I still think of Incline Village as one of my life's destinations, and still look at our Dallas pictures with such good memories. I think I saw Dallas on the 2008 concert tour. Hello to all who, through this site, bring us all so much pleasure sharing. Have a super day everyone...Cheers, Barb in Tucson, AZ..
Hi Ruth,
I must have spent a good 20 minutes looking at your photos, several times. Thanks for taking the time to share your wonderful experience.
Sally you made my day, even a picture from Marika Rökk!!!!!
Hi Inge, That is alright with me. I think this is part of the gift André shares with us. We talk about him and his music, then we share more, and before you know it, we are all learning something new. I had not known the name Marika before, but now, I've been all over the net reading about her and watching video clips. What a fabulous entertainer.
Something I noticed watching the clips, is Marika's Athleticism. This woman was no mere dancer, she was an athlete.
Sorry, I forgot this web is about André not Marika, I got carried away!
Inge, I'm glad to learn of Marika. I'd not heard of her before. I learn so much from Andre fans. In a way Marika reminds me of Marlene Dietrich, in that she was also in show business & from Germany I believe, but we heard about her, but I never had heard of Marika. It was interesting to see the video on youtube. See what all we learn from each other...
Sally, the guy with Marika Rökk is Johannes Heesters, also a good looking Dutch man, he is now lO3 and as far as I know, still alive. He had a great voice for the operetta and my mother used to say, every generation in Germany has a good looking Dutch man, she was right!!! Now we have André.
When Marika Rökk was about 6O she did a special on TV as Countess Maritza and you should have seen her dancing in her age over the stage, unbelievedable. When I saw it in the paper, I said I have to see that, I thought I would be disappointed because after all a woman with 6O and dancing???? But she was like a young girl and her temperament and dance was so spectacular, I will look in Germany if I can get that on a DVD.
Shirley, Marika was not like Marlene Dietrich, Marlene always played the vamp and a bad woman, but Marika had all the men bewitched and she looked like she could do it, in a nice way, she always ended up with the one she liked and along great dance and singing numbers.
That is the Hungarian Paprika in Her blood, and also the csardas! Kati
Marika Röck was born in Cairo, 1913 and passed in May 2004 in Baden at Vienna. She was a German/Austrian actress, singer and dancer, with Hungarian blood.
Thanks René for your information, so Marika was the same age as my mother and got to live till 91, so she was not even born in Hungary, but she was a real Hungarian, perhaps she cultivated the accent, because it was so much liked.
I do not know, where Marika was born, but Her Father must have been Hungarian, Her name is very much so, and that is why She inherited at least some hungarian blood, and knew the dances! Her First name is a Nickname for Mary or hungarian MARIA, the last name just a typical Hungarian last name. Kati
Marika Rökk
1913 - 2004
.
.
The actress Marika Rökk was born as Marie Karoline Rökk in Cairo. When the family moved to Budapest she took dance lesson in her childhood. In 1924 she intensified her dance career in Paris and joined the ballet company Hoffmann. With the company she got an engagement at Moulin Rouge in the same year. It followed appearances on Broadway and she went on tour through the USA before the company broke up in 1925.
From 1929 Marika Rökk began to appear on stage as a singer and dancer in revues and operettas in whole Europe.
She began her film career in England with the movies "Kiss Me, Sergeant" (30) and "Why Sailors Leave Home" (30). After that followed a movie in Hungary called "Kisertetek Vonata - Geisterzug" (33).
When she had a great success with the revue "Stern der Manege" she got a two-year contract with the Ufa.
Her first German movie was "Leichte Kavallerie" (35) and launched a great career which continued till to the 50's.
Marika Rökk soon became a leading star of the National Socialist Germany and could count on an experienced team with which she shot most of her movies. First of all director Georg Jacoby, who she got married in 1940 but also cinematographer Konstantin Irmen-Tschet, filmcomposer Franz Grothe and Peter Kreuder as well as choreographer Sabine Ress.
To her well-known movies till the end of war belong "Der Bettelstudent" (36), "Gasparone" (37), "Hallo Janine" (39), "Es war eine rauschende Ballnacht" (39), "Kora Terry" (40), "Frauen sind doch bessere Diplomaten" (41) and "Die Frau meiner Träume" (44). Together with the actor Johannes Heesters they created a dream pair.
The movies, which were created from the same model, enjoyed a great popularity and were continued in the 50's.
But for the present, she and Georg Jacoby were imposed with a working prohibition and Marika Rökk appeared in entertainment evenings for American troops. Only from 1948 she was able to play in movies agan and she took part in the movies "Die Czardasfürstin" (51), "Maske in Blau" (53) and "Bühne frei für Marika" (58).
Afterwards she only appeared seldom on the big screen and she turned to the stage again.
To her last cinematically works belong "Mein Mann, das Wirtschaftswunder" (60), "Die Fledermaus" (62), the TV serial "Die Schöngrubers" (73) and "Schloss Königswald" (87).
Other movies with Marika Rökk:
Heisses Blut (36) Und Du, mein Schatz, fährst mit (36) Karussell (37) Eine Nacht im Mai (38) Wunschkonzert (40) Tanz mit dem Kaiser (41) Hab' mich lieb (42) Fregola (48) Kind der Donau (50) Sensation in San Remo (51) Die geschiedene Frau (53) Nachts im grünen Kakadu (57) Die Nacht vor der Premiere (59) Heute gehn wir bummeln (61) Hochzeitsnacht im Paradies (62) Der keusche Lebemann (69) Der letzte Walzer (73) Die Gräfin vom Naschmarkt (80)
Yes Kati, Marika Rökk was Hungarian, I believe her mother was, too. I have read that biography from her before many years ago, could not keep all in my head. Most of her films I have seen after the war, when she made them I was not born at least the first half, haaaaa! She was a great REVUE STAR and unique!
