We have news from André. An interview in Dutch, telling the world about his upcoming tours. A special thank you to our very own Pruie for the find and to Peter van de Berg for the article.
André is releasing his information little by little, showing he is not only a excellent Entertainer, but a Master at keeping us in suspense and showing off his ability to heighten our excitement as we learn of and want to know more about his upcoming tours.

In Australia, André will play at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney, as well as in Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne & Brisbane. André & his JSO will take the Schönbrunn set decoration with them for the tours. He has made what will look like the front part of the Schönbrunn but on a smaller scale. (still impressive!) André will ship the set décor to Australia and it will take 3 months to arrive.
The Stade in Paris, France, the Boudewijnstadion in Brussels, The Sands in Amsterdam, Holland and Düsseldorf and the Olympic Stadium, Germany in Munich will host André's Mega-Projects! Each venue is to hold 30,000 people.
André admits to being a self professed "Control Freak". (Aren't we glad he is? That he does his music, his way?)
In 2008 André Rieu & his JSO will go to MEXICO and BRAZIL, then later go to CHILE and ARGENTINA.
André hopes to one day play in Red Square in Moscow.

André Rieu is uitgegroeid tot een mega-act die past in het rijtje van legendarische bands als de Rolling Stones, Genesis en The Police. De muzikale leider van het Johann Strauss Orkest heeft grootse plannen voor de toekomst. "Het lijkt me prachtig om ooit de eerste te zijn die op de maan speelt."
De binnenplaats achter het kasteeltje op de top van de Pietersberg bij Maastricht ademt de rustieke sfeer van een Italiaanse piazza. Een fraaie, kletterende drietraps fontein staat voor het net gerealiseerde pronkstuk van het landgoed: de orangerie. De serre in klassieke stijl doet dienst als botanische tuin.
André Rieu opent zichtbaar trots de deuren. De metershoge tropische planten staan er sinds kort. "Helemaal zelf bedacht en ontworpen. Op deze plek kom ik volledig tot rust. Straks komen er ook nog vissen, kleine vogels zoals kwarteltjes, en natuurlijk vlinders."
Tien jaar woont hij nu in het eeuwenoude kasteel, waarvan het oudste gedeelte uit 1452 stamt. Vanaf de eerste dag is Rieu bezig zijn monumentale woning te restaureren. "Voor mij is dit huis een dame op leeftijd die hulpbehoevend is. Toen we hier terechtkwamen, was het niet meer dan een bouwval. Ik vind het prachtig om alles in de originele staat terug te brengen. Bij mijn vorige woning heb ik ook elke steen veranderd. Als ik geen artiest was geworden, had ik nu zeker mijn geld verdiend als binnenhuisarchitect."
Het romantische optrekje past perfect bij de koning van de wals. De nieuwe ridderzaal in het kasteel doet dienst als ontvangstruime. Aan de wand van de in barokstijl ingerichte kamer hangen twee enorme schilderijen van Rieu en zijn echtgenote Marjorie. De ornamenten tegen het plafond en het houtsnijwerk op de deuren zijn versierd met bladgoud.
André Rieu speelt niet alleen de klassieke muziek die in de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw enorm geliefd was aan de Europese hoven. Hij leeft ook als een landheer. De 57-jarige Stehgeiger is over de hele wereld razend populair. 'The King of waltz', 'Mel Gibson of the violin' (vanwege zijn uitbundige haardos) en 'Rieu-san' (de kleine draak) zijn enkele koosnaampjes die hij van zijn fans heeft gekregen.
Rieu is met de bijna vijftig muzikanten en koorleden van het Johann Strauss Orkest doorgedrongen tot het groepje groten der aarde in de entertainmentbusiness. Toch staat hij daar niet bij stil. "Ik interesseer me enorm voor wetenschap. Er moet ook veel meer zijn in het universum dan alleen onze melkweg. Als je daar even aan denkt, is de rest erg klein. Dan stelt een kasteel, een snelle auto of succes opeens weinig meer voor."
Respect voor de medemens en vreugde in het leven. Daar draait het bij de muzikant om. "Voor mij is dat heel erg belangrijk. Ik doe mijn werk voor de lol. Elke dag probeer ik plezier te hebben. Mijn vrouw Marjorie houdt me scherp in de gaten. Ze relativeert alles wat ik doe en ze schroomt ook niet om dat tegen me te zeggen."
Dezer dagen is hij thuis in Maastricht om zijn drie inmiddels traditionele concerten op het Vrijthof voor te bereiden, die dit weekeinde plaatsvinden. Even gunt hij een kijkje in de keuken van zijn streng beveiligde kasteel.
Meer dan de helft van het jaar is Rieu met zijn orkest op pad. De andere maanden werkt hij aan nieuwe producties. "Ik vier nooit vakantie. Hooguit ga ik met mijn vrouw een paar dagen naar Rome of een andere plaats om even te relaxen. Het werk gaat eigenlijk altijd door. Of ik nog normaal over straat kan? O ja, dat is geen probleem. Natuurlijk word ik herkend. Ik zou liegen als ik ontken dat het ook mijn ego streelt. Ik geniet er doorgaans van."
André Rieu is uitgegroeid tot een ware wereldreiziger. Als kind droomde hij ervan om van het ene continent naar het andere te trekken. "Ik ben niet op pad als toerist. Als we op tournee zijn, kom ik ook niet uit mijn hotel. Hooguit loop ik van de lobby naar de bus om naar het optreden te vertrekken. Ik snuif wel de sfeer op in een stad. Ik voel dat gewoon. Op die manier neem ik de omgeving in mij op."
Europa, de Verenigde Staten, Japan, Canada. Rieu is er kind aan huis. Logisch dat hij zijn vleugels verder wil uitslaan. Australië wordt het eerste doel voor 2008. Hij is daar razend populair. Zeven van zijn dvd's staan in de top tien.
"In de wereld is er momenteel geen ander land waar ik zo geliefd ben. Australië wordt een fantastische, maar ook peperdure investering. Mijn adviseurs verklaren me voor gek, maar ik doe het toch. We staan daar onder meer in het Olympisch stadion. Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne en Brisbane. Ons orkest is overal te zien."
In september vertrekt hij opnieuw naar Japan. "We zijn dan toch in de buurt. Dan vliegen we ook meteen door naar Australië om daar een weekje promotie te doen voor de aankomende tournee."
Volgend jaar zijn ook Midden- en Zuid- Amerika aan de beurt. Eerst Mexico en Brazilië. Later Chili en Argentinië. De uitstraling van het Johann Strauss Orkest - wereldwijd heeft Rieu inmiddels 25 miljoen albums verkocht - is inmiddels doorgedrongen tot de Latijns-Amerikaanse landen. "Naar het Rode Plein in Moskou gaan we ook nog wel", zegt hij. Een week na het vallen van de Muur in Berlijn kreeg Rieu al verzoeken om in het Oostblok op te treden. "Moest ik spelen voor een publiek van elf mensen. Dan zat daar een of andere rijke zakenman achter. Die verzoeken kwamen ook uit China en uit de oliestaatjes. Ik heb daar geen zin in. Ik treed niet op voor het geld. Ik wil op de eerste plaats mensen vermaken die komen kijken omdat ze het orkest leuk vinden. Privéshowtjes horen daar niet bij."
André Rieu gaat geen enkele uitdaging uit de weg. Hij huldigt het principe dat bijna niets in het leven onmogelijk is. De uitspraak dat hij als eerste op de maan zou willen spelen, is dan ook serieus bedoeld. "Hij meent dat écht", zegt zijn persoonlijke assistente Kerstin Cornelis. "André probeert elk doel te verwezenlijken dat zich in zijn hoofd zet."
Voorlopig staat de spaceshuttle echter nog niet klaar en concentreert Rieu zich op het aardse deel. Op dit moment wordt in zijn eigen productiehal in Maastricht de laatste hand gelegd aan het indrukwekkende decor van het Weense paleis Schloss Schönbrunn. Het onderkomen van het keizerpaar Frans-Josef en Sissi heeft Rieu geïmponeerd. "We hebben daar een gedenkwaardig concert gegeven. Toen is het idee ontstaan dat ik dit beeld aan al mijn fans over de hele wereld wil laten zien. Daarom bouwen we het voorfront van het paleis op ware grootte na en nemen het mee op tournee."
Dat meteen liefst drie keer. Rieu heeft noodgedwongen meerdere sets nodig. Het duurt bijvoorbeeld drie maanden voordat al het materiaal per schip in Australië arriveert. In de tussentijd gaan elders de concerten gewoon door. Dus moet het decor in veelvoud gebouwd worden.
De locaties die André Rieu heeft uitgezocht voor zijn megaproject liegen er niet om. Het Stade de France in Parijs, het Boudewijnstadion in Brussel, de Arena's in Amsterdam en Düsseldorf en het Olympisch Stadion in München, om er een paar te noemen. Hij gaat op elke plek spelen voor minimaal 30.000 toeschouwers.
"Ik ben een controlfreak. Elk detail houd ik in de gaten. Ik wil de mensen laten meegenieten van al het moois dat Wenen heeft. Dat kan alleen door de bestaande omgeving zo goed als mogelijk na te bouwen. Het moet natuurlijk ook betaalbaar blijven voor het publiek. Elitaire dingen zeggen me niets. Ik maak muziek die interessant is voor de professor en de poetsvrouw."
Rieu heeft weinig op met de puristen die de manier waarop hij klassieke muziek presenteert aan de kaak stellen. Vooral in het begin van zijn carrière werd hij met regelmaat geconfronteerd met negatieve kritieken. "Ik hoor het ze alweer roepen als ik Also sprach Zarathustra van Richard Strauss speel: Dat wordt bij elke gemiddelde waspoedercommercial gebruikt! Ze doen maar. Vaak zijn dat mensen die zelf met pijn en moeite achthonderd albums verkopen, terwijl er van mij miljoenen over de toonbank gaan. Dat zegt volgens mij genoeg." Bij Rieu gaan muziek, show en entertainment hand in hand. "Ik heb bij het Limburgs Symfonie Orkest meegemaakt dat iemand in het publiek applaudisseerde en de dirigent zeer verbaasd omkeek. Zo wil ik niet op de bühne staan. Ik breng de toeschouwers op mijn manier met klassieke muziek in aanraking. Ik hoop dat daarna ook hun interesse is gewekt voor het zwaardere klassieke werk. Dan heb ik mijn doel bereikt."
Hij heeft inmiddels 120 mensen in vaste dienst. Het hele gevolg verplaatst zich in delen van Europa in twee eigen dubbeldeksbussen. Voor Amerika heeft hij drie speciale touringcars ter beschikking. Zoals de president van de Verenigde Staten wordt begeleid door een naaste medewerker met de football - het kogelvrije koffertje met daarin de codes om de kernraketten te lanceren - heeft André Rieu voortdurend iemand bij zich die zijn beroemde en peperdure Stradivarius uit 1667 geen moment uit het oog verliest.
Hij heeft zich tot in detail verdiept in het leven van de Oostenrijkse componist en dirigent Johann Strauss, de man aan wiens muziek Rieu veel te danken heeft. "Of er overeenkomsten tussen ons bestaan? Ik denk het wel. Strauss barstte van de energie, zijn levensvreugde en het vernuft om het zakelijke met de kunst te combineren. Ik zie inderdaad dingen daarvan bij mij terug."
André Rieu is er heilig van overtuigd dat hij 120 jaar wordt. Wat dat betreft heeft hij nog tientallen jaren voor de boeg. De vraag hoe hij ooit herinnerd wil worden, klinkt hem dan ook enigszins voorbarig in de oren. "Als ik dan toch een antwoord moet geven, hoop ik dat ze na mijn afscheid zeggen: Hij heeft mooie muziek gemaakt. Dat lijkt me heerlijk."

Hi! It's Ellen. Am I "right" that the wall and fountain Andre is standing in front of (and next to) is part of his OWN home? It looks VERY familiar to me! One of the "perks" of living in the Cleveland, Ohio area this last year was that one of the local PBS station (WVIZ) executives was given a "personal" tour of Andre's home. IF it's on again and I have "cable" access, I'll "tape" it and TRY to have copies made for anyone who would like to see it. BTW, one of the executives of the Akron-Canton PBS station had a "personal" tour, parts of which were sown during one of Andre's shows, too. I'll do the same thing with that one, IF I can spot it and tape it in time. Either one of the stations ALSO had a "live" visit w/Andre when he was in the area, back in 2006, I think! I got such a "kick" out of how the lady who was "promoting" the show was ALMOST falling all over him! She got kissed TWICE, European-style, he played part of the "Blue Danube" on his Stradivarius (violin) and even waltzed her around the room, humming the same waltz!! Whichever Andre show that is has been shown a great deal, too! I propose the same deal as the others! One more thing--One song I REALLY wish Andre would perform (and, maybe, have Suzen sing it?) is Neil Diamond's "The Story of My Life." I think the first lines go something like this: "The story of my life begins and ends with you. It starts the day you came and ends the day you leave!" It's a very POWERFUL song! While I'm at it, why NOT suggest Sting's "The Fields of Bali." Also, I AM looking into the dates when Andre is in Las Vegas and I MIGHT be able to see him there in October or later in December, when I hope to return there for another Siegfried and Roy "fundraiser!!" Tonight the New York special is finally, after one year, telcasted on our PBS station Plattsburgh, they usually do the first pledging for the tickets in Montréal in August, I wonder if they do??? I will watch it tonight and it is on tomorrow in Burlington in the afternoon.

Great to see confirmation that Andre is coming to Australia.
The Olympic Stadium in Sydney is an excellent venue; closer to the "heart" of Sydney where most people live - and well served by public transport.

Hello Paul: That is a good venue. Last year in Portland, OR I found the Rose Garden to be the same way. It is of great help to have transportation and lots of parking for those who drive.
The Olympic Stadium in Sydney is a great venue choice. I will be there is for sure. We need to know when Andre.

It sounded like he was talking about giving singular concerts in various main Europen cities to a minimum of 30,000 people at each concert. That's a lot of people. It sounds like he said that he was actually living in his castle now. Thanks for your partial translation, Jeanine. I think I also read that he doesn't mind being recognized on the street, but it is different when he is on tour. It was an interesting article, particularly since it is so current. Today Burlington and Plattsburgh showed the N.Y.Music hall special and in Burlington it was with a new interview, not much new he said in the interview, but one thing was new for me, he has now a second Stradivarius and when he plaid at the end for the lady who interviewed him "America the beautiful" she had tears in her eyes and André wiped them of her cheeks, eat your heart out ladies!
Wow, I tell you, this is a man who knows how to play to the camera. I bet she shows that clip to everyone she knows.

Oh, I've heard Andre play "America the Beautiful!" He did it as an encore at the Cleveland concert last May and a cappella--NO orchestra at all!! We joined in by singing the words and the orchestra sang with us, too!!! They even placed large American flags on the projection screens! It was quite an amazing and moving experience!!! BTW, my next Siegfried and Roy fundraiser is in the SAME week that Andre and the orchestra will be in Las Vegas--so IF I can "swing" it, I MAY be going back to LV in December!! Our Springfield PBS also played the NYC Music Hall tonight and the lady host was at that concert too. One thing Andre said was that "music was better than s-x", she laughed so hard and was blushing, then Andre laughed.
I had to work last night, but I know that Andre was on here as well, so I had to miss him. I was very sad that I couldn't see him.

today i walked through our local shopping centre, and as i went past i heard andre, so stopped. and they had two huge plasmas playing his cocerts and promoting him, the shop was jb hi fi at elizabeth south australia, next time i hope they will promote ticket sales. will also camp out if we have to cheers from humbug scrub

I live in a Retirement Village in Perth, Western Australia which we believe is one of the best places on earth. I know that that statement sounds ridiculous, but in so many ways we are extremely lucky. The weather is very good; the country side can be very harsh, but beautiful especially in the north of the state, with forest and farmland in the south. I’ll send a link to you for your interest and to help you plan a trip to Australia. Sadly, most of the tourists from the US only get as far as the East Coast
(Queensland and New South Wales ).

Well, looking back we know Andre did not make it to Mexico & Brasil in 2008, but I recently heard him say he was going to tour both countries "SOON".
