    Canada Day

On June 20, 1868, a proclamation signed by the Governor General, Lord Monck, called upon all Her Majesty's loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada on July 1st.

The July 1 holiday was established by statute in 1879, under the name Dominion Day .

There is no record of organized ceremonies after this first anniversary, except for the 50th anniversary of Confederation in 1917, at which time the new Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings, under construction, was dedicated as a memorial to the Fathers of Confederation and to the valour of Canadians fighting in the First World War in Europe.

The next celebration was held in 1927 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Confederation. It was highlighted by the laying of the cornerstone by the Governor General of the Confederation Building on Wellington Street and the inauguration of the Carillon in the Peace Tower.

Since 1958, the government has arranged for an annual observance of Canada's national day with the Secretary of State of Canada in charge of the coordination. The format provided for a Trooping the Colours ceremony on the lawn of Parliament Hill in the afternoon, a sunset ceremony in the evening followed by a mass band concert and fireworks display.

Another highlight was Canada's Centennial in 1967 when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II attended the celebrations with Parliament Hill again being the backdrop for a large scale official ceremony.

The format changed in 1968 with the addition of multicultural and professional concerts held on Parliament Hill including a nationally televised show. Up until 1975, the focus of the celebrations, under the name "Festival Canada", was held in the National Capital Region during the whole month of July and involved numerous cultural, artistic and sport activities, as well as municipalities and voluntary organizations. The celebration was cancelled in 1976 but was reactivated in 1977.

A new formula was developed in 1980 whereby the National Committee (the federal government organization charged with planning Canada's Birthday celebrations) stressed and sponsored the development of local celebrations all across Canada. "Seed money" was distributed to promote popular and amateur activities organized by volunteer groups in hundreds of local communities. The same approach was also followed for the 1981 celebrations with the addition of fireworks displays in 15 major cities across the nation.

On October 27, 1982, July 1st which was known as "Dominion Day" became "Canada Day".

Thanks Sally for the Canadian History information. I remember my older sister went to Expo 67 (1967) in Quebec. They came back with items for the family. I still have a little doll from that. That year marked the 100th anniversary of Confederation. It was nice that the world could celebrate in Quebec with Expo 67.

My same two sisters went out to Expo 87 in British Columbia. That marked the 120th anniversary of Confederation. They brought me back a doll again! I collect dolls, so it was fitting. Funny how things turn out.

Thanks again Sally. By the way the one sister that went to Quebec and British Columbia was also named Sally! My sister.

Hi everyone, I would appreciate some prayers for my sister's son Scott who is in the hospital.  He showed symptoms of heart problems but then today the called in a pulmonary specialist and they may be looking at a partially collapsed lung.  He is a heavy smoker and has been smoking since his teen years.  He is 37 now.  Hopefully it is nothing more than the lung problem.  I will keep you informed.  Thank you so much.

My friend Judy is home from the hospital but she has developed bronchitis.  I don't really know why they left her go home but she did not want to go to therapy or rehab. which I think she should have done.  Her feet are so swollen she cannot walk and I don't know if fluid is building up again or not but I worry about the lungs.  I will keep you posted on Judy also.   Thanks for all your prayers.  Hugs

      Radio star Jones has cancer

BROADCASTER Alan Jones has revealed he has prostate cancer, but says he's "getting on with it" and wants his fans to as well.

The talkback king said he would be off work for several weeks while he had surgery but he would return to his breakfast slot on Sydney radio station 2GB when he had recovered.

"Of course I will be returning to air, I've got to make a quid," Jones said.

Jones called a press concerence today, where he said he had been diagnosed with the cancer after undergoing a biopsy.

"The prospect of full recovery is very significant," he said.

      The 67-year-old is Sydney's highest-rating radio personality.

Jones said he was diagnosed in May after doctors examined 20 samples, and his cancer had been described as in the mid-range in terms of seriousness.

He said while he expected many listeners would be empathetic, it was "terribly important not to be self-indulgent about these things".

"I am getting on with it and I want you to as well," Jones said when asked if he had a message for his listeners.

Jones said he kept his diagnosis secret from family, friends and colleagues until Tuesday.

"I was only able to indicate to the board these matters the day before yesterday in the sense that I felt it was best that people don't know because people worry about these things and the fewer people who are worrying the better," he said.

"I know that the board has been very supportive and the intention is that I will continue here.

"If you lose intellectual rigour you tend to wither a little. I don't intend to wither, not just yet anyway."

The surgery would be carried out at Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital in two weeks, and Jones said he intended to be on air until the eve of the operation.

He said he was maintaining a positive outlook and was confident he had the best medical team.

      Bad year for health

The veteran broadcaster has been plagued by health and low energy problems this year which forced him off air for a number of weeks.

Jones - who recently bought a $4.5 million apartment at Avoca Beach, on the NSW Central Coast - signed a seven-year contract with Macquarie's 2GB in February 2002 which expires early next year.
He has maintained a relentless workload during the past two decades but last month he was caught napping at a Michael Buble concert at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

He also declined to host a tribute to former prime minister John Howard in May due to illness.

According to the 2GB website, Alan Jones received the Australian Radio Talk Personality of the Year award in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996 and 1997.

In 2004, he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO).

That got us the rest of the way home, then it was cold lemomade when we got home! Ah, the good ole' summertime!!!

Soprano Joan Sutherland breaks legs in a fall

Opera star Dame Joan Sutherland has broken both her legs after a fall in the garden of her home in Switzerland.

Her husband, conductor Richard Bonynge, revealed the 81-year-old soprano is expected to be in hospital for eight weeks.

The singer, born in Sydney, was due to visit family in Australia with her husband. Instead, Bonynge ventured alone to conduct performances later this month with Opera Australia.

Opera Australia chief executive Adrian Collette said Bonynge told him the accident was upsetting.

"But she was insistent that he come and conduct [Lucia di Lammermoor ]," said Collette.

Sutherland has been acclaimed for her musical intonation, and wowed audiences during the 1950s and 1960s with her Bel Canto performances. Her 1959 performance of Lucia di Lammermoor at the Royal Opera House in London was considered a breakthrough.

Sutherland's 1961 double LP, The Art of the Prima Donna, won a Grammy Award in the same year she was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire — conferring the title of "dame."

Yes, I've always had the impression that Andre has a very good sense of humor, especially in certain situations. One of my favorite pictures of him, he looks like someone told him a funny joke and he is really enjoying it. Then remember when he was playing with Sheehan, an Irish jig, and he was doing a little jig himself. Then there's always that little Rap video he did. Times like that I really enjoy.
As for Kaj's photos, he really does take some great shots.( I'm trying to catch up on all you guys have been talking about.) Been a busy day so far. After taking my sis to Dr appt, coming home to do some yard work, then doing the laundry, am ready to settle down a bit. Remember when we had talked about recorders? I heard the prettiest melody for a recorder, by Vivaldi, recorder concerto in F. I never got that out of ours! And now, I really have a request for Andre to play.. a waltz, by Josef Strauss, called WATERCOLORS. Anyone know the one I'm talking about? Andre could really make that one shine. Thank you Constance.  I once wrote in a newspaper column that my prayers are a ladder to heaven and each person who asks me to pray for someone adds another rung to that ladder.   Hope you are well.  Love

I have seen the PBS program that you mentioned. I saw it here in my side of the world...Portland, Oregon. I don't know where you reside, but Portland, OR is on the West Coast of the United States.
I have heard of others seeing this same program on the East Coast of the United States. It is probably a recorded program that airs everywhere.
I enjoyed that interview "Denise" had with André, also. I believe you are right with the name of "Denise", but not sure. Anyone else know for sure??

Once upon a time, in a tiny village there lived a sparrow named Guf. He was a very plain, tiny bird who really never thought he had anything that was extraordinary. Other more brilliant birds such as cardinals or bright yellow canaries would fly and sing loud and clear around the village.

Some people had bird feeders and others had binoculars to look at the beautifully feathered friends of nature.

There seemed to be something that bothered the tiny little Guf deep down. He felt as though he didn't anything to show or give to the people of the village to make them appreciate the wonder of such magnificent creatures.

One day Guf was walking around out of sorts when all of a sudden an angel appeared out of no where. The angel was in white and had golden flowing hair. Guf's eyes widened at the magnificent sight. Never in his tiny world had he ever seen such a bright light surrounding the angel.

The angel approached Guf with a smile on its face. Guf managed to ask the angel its name trembling. The angel replied, "I am the Angel of Seventh Heaven. I have come from the Hall of Souls in Heaven".

Guf gasped and uttered, "Why are you here with me?"

The Angel of Seventh Heaven said to Guf that a little bird told all the angels in heaven that there was a tiny bird who did not know he had a purpose in life.

Guf's eyes widened again, "Me?" "Yes you Guf", the Angel of Seventh Heaven said.

The Angel picked Guf up and placed him on its should and whispered into Guf's little ear.

"Whenever there is a baby about to be born, the soul of that baby ascends from the Hall of Souls in the Seventh Heaven. The soul ascending is seen by only one creature in all the universe. That creature is the Sparrow. You Guf are a sparrow and, with concentration and pride, you will look up and see all the souls ascending to earth. When this happens, you will sing and sing and sing with great happiness and love for each and every one of these tiny souls, who are about to be born into this world."

Guf closed his eyes and concentrated on his inner soul. When he opened them the angel was gone and something fantastic happened. Guf could see the tiny souls ascending in front of him. Each one never the same as any. Guf started to sing and sing and sing.

The people of the village began to hear his beautiful voice loud and clear. They were amazed at the sound so crystal clear was coming from such a small bird. They did not know why he was singing because they could not see the souls ascending. They just sat or stood and listened to that glorious sound.

From then on Guf sang and sang and sang.

    The End

Well those "Braxtons Hicks" as we learned from the doctor that started Tuesday am have now started into contractions as of Friday evening around 8:30 pm.

Dana was given an ultrasound and the baby is going to be a big one, estimated at 9lbs to 10lbs! She is over due by a week so that is normal. She is 0 cm dilated and the head is not engaged into the birth canal.

It is now Saturday am and she is,let me say, in a great deal of agony every so many minutes!

The doctors are going to let her labour until Monday am. If she has not progressed 10cm and the head engaged into the birth canal, they will c-section her.

That's all for now my friends. I will keep you posted when I have more.

I loved the lovely young ladies in their gorgeous white gowns and the handsome young men it their tails dancing in the Schöbrunn DVD. I could have done without the ice skaters and just watched the dancers, They were so graceful.

And in the Royal ALbert Hall DVD I was captivated by the 6 piccolo players in :"Stars and Stripes." (some on should tell them that the title is "Stars and Stripes forever.")

They were as cute as could be and played well too. U think they are "The Bell Girls" but could find no other reference to them.

No Andre does not have scouts out looking for pretty girls.  Those dancers are from the Vienna Opera Ballet and he hired them for Schonbrunn and as I understand they will also be in Australia for the Stadium Tour.  Of course these dancers happen to be young and most are pretty.  We met one of them in Toronto and talked with her for a while.  They are very nice.  I am glad that Andre's girls keep your heart beating Grandpa Mike because I can say the same thing for Andre - he keeps our hearts beating a little too fast most of the time : )

I don't know who the Piccolo players were in the DVD but I would image they were members of a local (what do you call them?) drum corp.?   He hires a lot of singers and dancers and musicians for his concerts.    Take care of yourself and keep your heart in check       : )  Hugs

I wonder who does the advance work. FInds piccolo players, etc. Does very good work.

I wish my German were better. I get maybe one work in five in the songs. Of course the Viennese dialect doesn't help. I did find an English translation of "Wenn Ich mit meinem Dackel."

And the opera award goes to...

    11 July 2008

Over 200 opera buffs crammed into the Lutheran Centre in Noosa last Wednesday night to watch Sydney counter tenor Russell Harcourt win the much coveted $15,000 first prize in the 2008 Dame Joan Sutherland Award and also the very popular People’s Mayoral Choice award which is selected by an audience vote.

Second prize of $4,000 went to Baritone Josh Rowe from Brisbane and the $1,000 Cheryl Smart encouragement award went to Soprano Anna Lucy Whitehead from Melbourne.

Special guest Dr Richard Letts AM presented the prizes along with guest judge international soprano Lisa Gasteen and Cheryl Smart. The Finals were held in two parts – the concert, followed by the awards, which were recorded by 4MBS.

"This year the competition was very close” said Meg Lawrence, Noosa Federation of the Arts President “Never before have we had such a range of voices and talent and the judges found it extremely difficult to select the winners.

It is wonderful to see the competition evolve into a truly national vocal competition with such outstanding gifted performers and judges.”

The Dame Joan Sutherland Award National Vocal Competition is part of the Noosa Long Weekend and has launched several international singing careers including Mirusia Louwerse who is currently touring as lead soprano with Andre Rieu.

The Award, open to opera singers – females aged 20-32 years and males aged 22-35 years was judged by Marilyn Richardson, James Christiansen, Brad Jarrett and special guest judge, renowned international opera singer Lisa Gasteen.

To all the French Andre fans, Happy Bastille Day.
Bastille Day has strong signifiication for the French because the holiday symbolizes the birth of the Republic. As in the US, where the signing of the Declaration of Independence signaled the start of the American Revolution, in France the storming of the Bastille began the Great Revolution. In both countries, the national holiday thus symbolizes the beginning of a new form of government.

A personal message from Andre Rieu himself

We have just finished our Maastricht concert and it went very well! We had a big choir that entered after the interval with "Conquest of Paradise", all carrying Torches. They then performed the Soldier's Chorus from Gounod's "Faust" and a Russian piece called "The Twelve Robbers" sung a cappella – very beautiful! Then came the famous Huntsmen's Chorus from Der Freischütz, complete with a horn band, and then your lovely Mirusia sang "Le Vergine degli Angeli", which of course you have on our Waltzing Matilda CD.

For something completely different we then performed the Beatles' song "When I am sixty-four" – very funny and entertaining it was! And then we brought Australia to Maastricht with "Waltzing Matilda" and "Tie me kangaroo down", with 150 men jumping around like kangaroos. I wish all of you had been there to join in the fun! But don't worry, a DVD is due for release next year. Thanks for your ongoing support and look forward to seeing you at the end of the year!

Hi everyone, I want to tell you a funny story but first of all we visited Judy today for the first time since her near-fatal heart attack.  They live about 1 1/2 hours north of us.  Judy looks really good for all she has gone through.  She is walking with a walker but is still very weak.  She must watch when she gets up from a chair because her blood pressure just drops.  But she is doing well and I just hope it stays that way.  She still has some arteries that are partially blocked so I don't know what they will do about that.  It will be very hard to get her back into the hospital for any more tests.  She said to thank everyone for all the prayers and the cards she received.  She believes (and so do I) that these prayers saved her life.  So thank you everyone.

Now the funny story of 10 mouths to feed.  As you know we have two cats and one outdoor cat whom we named Spooky because she is so scared of everything.  Well we found out that Spooky had kittens (we have been feeding her since we first saw her) but we didn't know how many.  Our neighbor said she saw three and she complained to the owners of the community (grrrrrr) so he came and set a trap for Spooky and the kittens.  Well we told him we were not very happy about that (to say the least) so twice a day we went over to the neighbor's house and checked the traps in the event they were trapped we would let them go.  So after a few weeks the traps disappeared and of course we did not know if he got anything or what.  But then we saw Spooky when we put her food out and a few weeks ago (mostly around dusk) we started to see a few kittens with her.  First she brought two that looked exactly like her, mostly dark brown with tan spots and Spooky has a ring of tan all around her one eye.  So we named them Oreo and Micetro.  Then Clyde saw a cream colored kitten and I saw a pure black kitten.  So we named them Creamcicle and Ebony.  So we figured we had them all covered.  Then last night I saw a light gray kitten.  We haven't named him or her as yet but we figured that must be all of them but who knows.  Then our neighbor across the street left for California for her son's wedding and she has two cats Molly and Misty so we are feeding them also.  I think it is so funny that all of a sudden we have 10 mouths to feed.  Now of course the neighbors kitties are a temporary thing but it is just so cute with all these cats around here.  I will keep you informed if the total increases.  Hugs

Okay, here's the deal on Manchester, NH April 21. Tickets are more expensive at more levels. Row 1 - 4 $700 a pair, meet and greet, and DVD/CD. Rows 4 - 12 $480 a pair and CD; Rows 13 back $300 a pair, and tiers $280 a pair. I bought two for $480 but am not going to tell my sister how much I paid for them. We should be in pretty good shape because it's so early. Although last year we were one of the first in CT and ended up way over on the right. The deal has been that I pay for the tickets and my sister pays for the hotel. If anyone wants to go to Manchester, just call PBS and you can pledge for all levels right now. I told the woman in charge of Andre pledges that now we have to buy tickets a year in advance. Her response was that they have been working on it for the whole year and just finished now. I am happy that we will be in the first part this year. Sometimes I think they're a little stale by the time they get to us (usually next to last). If some of you go to Montreal, better come to NH because PBS person thought he was not going to Montreal or Boston. I can't believe I just blithely spent that money. It goes out a lot faster than it comes in.

I believe a $90 increase per ticket is too much. I think it will cause some people not to go, but becuase there are fewer concerts probably more people will travel. Manchester will get Boston and perhaps Montreal, and maybe even New York. For that price he'd better have something new. This summer was a very pleasant evening but not one new thing and at our concert of the sopranos only Mirusia sang a solo. There was only one viola player. We were sort of at the end of the line so I think many had left already. This year I believe we're nearer to the beginning. Well, we always have a good time no matter what, despite this year a very annoying woman going to the front of the stage and flashing her camera when he was playing a solo. The photos show you the story from the very beginning, right up to the amazing world première of ‘A Romantic Night in Vienna’ in Toronto. Magical photos take you further into the fairy-tale atmosphere of the Efteling Park and the recording of the DVD/CD “In Wonderland”. And we end up (where else?) in the heart of Vienna, in front of the Empress Sisi’s fabulous winter palace, the world-famous Hofburg. SOUTHERN Highlands resident Hedwig Lindemann will celebrate her 100th birthday this Sunday.

Mrs Lindemann was born in Vienna and lived there during the two World Wars. She remembers that her parents not only went without food to feed their children in the war years, but also helped war victims.

During the First World War, Mrs Lindemann was sent to a farm in Holland after she was seriously ill with chest problems She believes her life was saved by farm living and having milk, which was not available in her home.

When she eventually arrived back in Vienna, her parents were surprised that she could not speak her native tongue. She is now fluent in Dutch and Austrian, as well as English.

Mrs Lindemann’s father was a musician and a musical conductor and this led to her career as a violinist with travelling women’s orchestras.

She met her future husband when he attended one of her concerts and begged the orchestra’s chaperone to be able to talk to her after the performance.

Mrs Lindemann is often seen singing and humming along to popular waltzes and European folk and traditional music on Andre Rieu DVDs.

In the 1950’s, the Lindemanns immigrated to Sydney with their daughter. The family bought greenbelt land near Bankstown Aerodrome, where Mr Lindemann worked as an aircraft mechanic.

I am very anxious to hear from PBS for the Reading concert.  If she said they are in ticket negotiations then I guess Reading is on the list but I am very curious about the prices.  The first year we paid $250.00 for 2 tickets, the second year it was (2008) $450.00 but we got the 250.00 tickets and ended up in A3, second row, seat 1, 2 which was not bad because I could slip across the aisle and get a high five from Andre.  This year I don't know what kind of price they will have.
Since we are thinking of going to Maastricht we may only get to one concert here and that would be Reading or A. City whichever one he picks.

You know it is too bad that PBS is charging these ridiculous prices.  I wonder if Andre knows about it.  A lot of good fans have to miss out on concerts or go to the ticket vendors but like Marilyn said all the good seats will be taken except for scalper tickets and they will be worse.

(we wanted to introduce Andre and Andre's orchestra to my two sisters in Dorset, UK) These cities included London, Prague, Salsberg, Vienna and Budapest. Whereas back in Canberra in music shops, department stores and chemists we were able to find all Andre's DVD's.

I am sure that there must be a simple answer to this situation but are still amazed that countries bordering Andre's home country have not joined in Andre's continuing world wide appeal.

Many of the DvDs being released in Australia are of Concerts that took place many years ago in Europe and are being re-released by Universal Music Australia, just for Australia. You only have to look at Andre's record on the Australian Charts to see that what he has achieved in Australia is unique. He still has 10 DvD's in the top 40 this week in Australia. A quick search and I cannot find any Andre Dvd's on any other world charts at the moment. The big appeal at the moment is very much Australian based.

People and Celebrities - Andre Rieu Is The King Of Waltz          7/25/08

André Rieu, the king of waltz:
André Rieu is much more than a virtuoso violinist, he is a phenomenon! Each of his concerts bring together thousands of fans around the world. Businesswise, this man has helped to dust off classical music!
André Rieu is a real phenomenon in the area of very demanding and elitist classical music. He is indeed one of the few artists in this area who has conquered a place of stardom by collecting millions of fans of all generations. Each of his concert dates are fully booked several months in advance, and yet the venues he chooses are not as intimate as it often is in classical music, as is the case of the Stade de France!  It is a paradox that many criticize but André Rieu is fun! For him, music must be festive. His concerts are indeed genuine shows where each listener is invited to dance and hum!

A path out of the ordinary:
André Rieu was born on 1 October 1949 in Maastricht in Holland in a family of musicians, his father was a known symphony conductor.  From the age of 5 years, he played his first violin.  Soon, his teachers found that André Rieu is talented. He is distinguished by his virtuosity at the Royal Conservatory of Liege and Maastricht Conservatorium from 1968 to 1973, then at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he studied the violin from 1974 to 1977. It was during these years of studies he discovers a  passion for composers like Strauss or Lehàr. At the end of his studies, he became concertmaster of the Symphony Orchestra of Limburg (Limburgs Sinfonie Orchestra). He would remain within the orchestra until 1989 but in the meantime, he spends part of his time creating a first group known as the Maastricht Salon Orchestra in 1978, before forming his own orchestra in 1987, the Johann Strauss Orchestra. Therefore, success is within range.

          La valse revisited:
Starting from 1995, the Johann Strauss Orchestra goes from success to success in Europe. In France, André Rieu began to be noticed in 1997 with the release of his first album titled simply Valses. His interpretations revisited the most beautiful romantic waltzes including the Second Valse by Shostakovich which opened the hearts of the public. His concerts explode in the mediam of classical music. With many costumes, elaborate staging and lights, the show is worthy of the biggest pop stars. And it pleases, no doubt! The public is captivated by the musical arrangements of André Rieu and they cannot  help dancing at each concert. The classics became popular under his leadership in this less formal setting.

Since his first album, Andre Rieu has released, with equal success,  Bal in Vienna (May 1998), Romantic Moments(October 1998), André Rieu in Concert (December 1998)  Ball of the Century (October 1999), Life is Beautiful (September 2000) and Love Songs (November 2001). In 2003, during the celebration of his 25-year career, Andre Rieu has also released a DVD recorded during a concert in Tuscany.

Hi Alma & Mike: Andre has appeared in the UK, and has a fantastic DVD of it, Live at the Royal Albert Hall. He has played in Vienna a few times as well. Yet yes, many are not aware of his music. I feel sorry for them. I do think Andre is better known in Europe than you might have been lead to believe.

Australia is currently undergoing a Rieu Riot! A good way to riot for sure.

Gosh, I wish I was on vacation with you. It sounds as if you went to many wonderful cities.

I hope you can send your sisters some DVDs from Australia, and the new CD, Waltzing Mathilda.

“Alles is geregisseerd. Anders is het onmogelijk om zaken als het podium, licht, geluid en catering tegelijk op dezelfde plaats te krijgen. We presenteren totaal-entertainment. Voor ons is dit ook een dankjewel aan het Nederlandse publiek dat André vanaf het eerste moment gesteund heeft.”

Kan het nog groter? “Voor ons hoeft dat niet. Je kunt bij wijze van spreken de Eifeltoren nabouwen, maar met dit paleis kunnen we nog een hele tijd vooruit. We willen graag Zuid-Amerika veroveren. Daar zijn we nog nooit geweest. De mensen daar krijgen ook dit kasteel te zien.”

Inge, I do agree with you on the PBS prices, but another thought. Without PBS Andre gets no advertising at all, at least not here in the US. How many tv stations, other than PBS, even mentions his name, how many newspapers or magazines have articles about him. No major tv networks have ever interviewd him that I know of. Yet I think only PBS uses him for the pledge drives, they know he sells. They make big bucks off him,if they didn't they wouldn't give him the time of day. When they do have a pledge drive, using Andre, look at the prices they want to charge for his dvds and cds, and then some won't even mention that he has a concert in a nearby town. When I first saw Andre on PBS a "pledge" of $150.00 got me a dvd. Good grief, I could go to his boutique or Amazon and get one for $30.00. That shows me how the cookie crumbles! So I'm not sure , I have mixed feelings about PBS. But I know I wouldn't be willing to pay $700 for a pair of tickets.

Hi Jeff, no, I wouldn't boycott PBS, they do have some good programs I enjoy, and I do support my local station, but I kind of have a love-hate kind of thinking about them. Of course they need to get funding, but I think they go a little overboard on the price of their offers, like the dvds and cds I mentioned. I don't know the working arrangement they have with Andre but I won't be paying $700 for a pair of concert tickets. I know that most of PBS revenues come from private donations & grants, but about half comes from their pledge drives. A lot of people don't like the pledge drive periods so they might not watch unless a "special" like Andre Rieu came on, and even then, many have caught him quite by accident, right before they switch the channel. Then, as in the case of many of us, we are glued to the TV!
And true, everyone deserves to be paid for their work, especially good musicians. I just wish Andre got a little more of the money. I'll wager that the ticket prices are much more reasonable where PBS is not involved.

Normally you can order the "as seen on PBS" on their shop pbs site. They now have the Live In Vienna, a dvd & cd at 33.97, 1 cd at 18.98, or 1 dvd at 19.99, so there you can get an idea of the difference. In actualality, if you pay 150 for a dvd at pledge time, you are really giving them over a $100 pledge. That's the way our channel does anyway. I do support them, but I'll do it my way. I'll buy my music elsewhere & when I just can't wait, I get it from the boutique.

ANDRE RIEU HAS AN ENTIRELY DIIFERENT SELECTION FOR HIS LIGHT CLASSICAL MUSIC, CONCERTS ARE MORE RELAXED PLAYFUL, ALSO VERY PROFESSIONAL, MOST OF THE TIME ALMOST PERFECT. It will be a spectacular. BTW, I think Marie doesn't mean that Bocelli would not have a good concert, only that it will be different. I was wondering what the price of his tickets were when I saw the 60 Minutes with Andre & Andrea,. both were interesting. I couldn't afford $900 to see Andrea, but a cheaper seat I'd try for. Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me
And he sang as he sat and waited by the billabong
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Down came the stockman, riding on his thoroughbred,
Down came the troopers, one, two, three.
"Where's the jolly jumbuck you've got in your tuckerbag?
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me

    Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me
And he sang as he sat and waited by the billabong
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Up jumped the swagman and plunged into the billabong,
"You'll never catch me alive," cried he
And his ghost may be heard as you ride beside the billabong,
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Authentic Australian Version, credited to A.B. (Banjo) Paterson

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong, Under the shade of a coolibah tree, And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled "Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?" Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled, "Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?" Along came a jumbuck to drink at the billabong, Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee, And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker bag, "You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me". Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me And he sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tucker bag, "You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?". Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred, Down came the troopers, one, two, three, "Whose is that jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?" "You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me". Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me "Whose is that jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?", "You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me?". Up jumped the swagman, leapt into the billabong, "You'll never catch me alive," said he, And his ghost may be heard as you pass by the billabong, "Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".

Kati, I've heard this tune forever,it used to be played in many old westerns, but I had never heard the words, except maybe the chorus til I heard Burl Ives sing it one time. The words never made sense to me so I preferred then, and still do, just the melody. I was always told it was just an old Celtic folk song with no words.

Me again with some possibly off the wall observations. (Well, really only one)

It seems to me that American audiences are much more restrained than those in Europe (Let alone Australian.) When I attended the Albuquerque concert I was prepared to march around the aisles and waltz with a stranger. What happened? Nothing, nadam nuchts. I was disappointed. The only other American concert I've seem was the Christmas in BYC on PBS. I saw no or little marching or dancing. Even the supposedly staid brits cut loose on the Albert Hall concert.

Anyone else notice this? C'mon Americans, we need tp show the rest of the world that we can cut loose with the best of them!!

Hey Mike.  Did you not waltz?  Not dance?  The reason I ask is this..At the Milwaukee concert, a man asked a few women near him to waltz (his wife and other's unknown) and they said no, so he got up and danced around by himself!  Bravo to him!

If everyone waits for someone else, no one will ever get up.

Our own Kati, got up and was "csardasing away up front".  She danced in front of the entire crowd.  Showed them how to have a good time.

Still, I know just what you mean.  I have been to concerts in many states, and some the crowd is good, some not so..

I think Andre would have crowds hyped here, if he appeared at malls, signed and met for free.  The last year he did Meet & Greets, we paid from $500 to $1,000 for a pair of tickets to it.

Please don't let others in the crowd dampen your spirits.  I know I enjoy the concert no matter what.  In Portland one year, too many were just sitting there, on came Suzan to sing, I made sure to stand an applaud after she finished.  Tell you what...Andre noticed.  I think he was happy to see those of us taking part in the concert.  Next came the Tenors and more people stood up with us.  Guess we had to get them going.

Create a banner, make up some flags to wave, Oh, you should have seen the "Happy Notes" Barbara H made.  Andre saw them during the concert, and asked me about them at the Meet & Greet in Dallas.  He even signed one for me.  He enjoys when the crowd has fun and shows it.

So enough rambling for me.  Those are just some of my thoughts on it all.

Everyone.. Get Up & Dance !

Mike, I agree, some audiences seem more subdued, but I can assure you that not all are. I was at the concert Sally talks about, with the happy notes, and I can tell you we had fun. Sally, I have been looking back at "words from the webmaster", the pictures of the concerts you have attended, so much fun! Those were no subdued concerts. Watch a child, look what fun they have, and the couples dancing in the isles. BTW Sally, I miss the "words"! Back to concerts though, I think Andre feeds off the energy of the audience. The concert will probably be much livelier and upbeat. It's that "connection", if we're plugged in so is he. An Andre Rieu concert is meant to be, not only beautiful, but fun. It's a party and we should go ready to celebrate. If I can't dance,I can clap and sing, and show an enthusiastic appreciation for all he & the JSO do. They love what they do and it shows, but it's a lot of hard work. Sometimes we only get out of something what we put into it. Mike, you mentioned Royal Albert Hall. That audience probably is an appreciative one, many have known or attended "the proms" there and they know how popular the last night is.It's more relaxed & spontaneous, much more like an Andre concert. There's something to be said for fun, it's contagious!

Shirley, just yesterday I was telling one of my therapists about the Dallas concert where Andre asked "Is everyone from Dallas" (he asks at most his concerts, where the crowd is from) and someone yelled out 'Cow Town'.   Andre chuckled and then Swaggered to the front of the stage, like a cowboy just off his horse, and with his best John Wayne Texas Twang imitation said, "Y'all from Cow Town"?

It was a hilarious moment.  The crowd, the JSO and even Andre had to laugh.

scroll to the middle for the Happy Notes. You will also see a booklet made by Moderator Lawrence.  Andre looked through it, and asked where I got it.  He signed it too.

I do hope that the JSO will visit Albuquerque again and that PBS finds a better venue. There are several good venues in the area but the one they chose for his visit in December 2007 was, in my opinion, shabby. Andre and his fans deserved better. This could have been part of the reason that the audience seem subdued. It matters not to me. If the JSO comes within a 1 day drive of Albuquerque, I will be there, ready to dance and march.

Lloyd Webber lauds Vancouverite, 23, for
`the most delicious quality when she sang'

Elicia MacKenzie, the exuberant 23-year-old Vancouverite who went from what Andrew Lloyd Webber called "almost zero to hero" was the surprise winner last night as the CBC-TV program How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? came to a close.

"I never expected this would happen to me," MacKenzie told the Star when she had a chance to speak privately backstage. "I was shocked, I was flabbergasted, I couldn't breathe!"

The people of Canada voted for MacKenzie over Woodstock's Janna Polzin, who had seemed the favourite going in, making the young woman who said her favourite thing was "rollerblading the seawall in Stanley Park" the star of the Mirvish production of The Sound of Music opening Oct. 15 at the Princess of Wales Theatre.

Host Gavin Crawford was visibly surprised as he read out MacKenzie's name and her purple-clad supporters screamed loudly as they hoisted signs that spelled "E-L-I-C-I-A," drowning out the crowd in lime green whose placards announced "I'm a Fanna Janna."

This marked the end of a process that began in January, with open auditions held across Canada. Two hundred semifinalists soon became 50, who got to hone their skills in "Maria School" and from them 20 were picked to audition for Lloyd Webber on the stage of the Palladium Theatre in London.

After that, Lloyd Webber picked 10 who went on to further work in Salzburg and finally appeared on the six-week program. The show generated impressive ratings for the CBC, rising to an average of 732,000 on Sunday night, with more than a million viewers by the time the program ended.

Judges Elaine Overholt of Toronto and John Barrowman of London were also moved by the final choice of the viewing audience, with Overholt describing MacKenzie as "the dark horse that came up through the middle."

When the program began, MacKenzie seemed to take a back seat to some of the more seasoned talents, but her natural exuberance won over the judges as well as the people of Canada.

Shortly before the final program, Lloyd Webber said MacKenzie had "grown the most of all the girls on the program," and after her victory, he told the studio audience that "Canada had made a very, very wise choice."

Lloyd Webber felt that MacKenzie had "the most delicious quality when she sang. She's just a wonderful girl."

Producer David Mirvish said he found it all "pretty exhilarating. It's thrilling that we're going to be able to bring a new star for the people of Canada to discover."

When asked if he thought he would do this again – as Lloyd Webber had done in England – by mounting a similar casting search for the lead in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, he responded: "I would love to see Joseph here and I feel television programs like this are valuable because they connect the whole country."

"This is my time to shine," said a beaming MacKenzie. "This is my time to keep growing and make the people of Canada proud that they chose me."

I was looking for somewhere to go this weekend...and thought of my local valley. Vezer Vineyards. They have a Baristo (coffee) and Deli, as well as a really good Zin Wine.

And then I saw something Kati might appreciate: They are Hungarian!

Add me to another going crazy list with regard to ANDRE......off the walls as usual, SLEEP, whats that?? Now today you include OVATION mini teasers, which you know I can't even get my hands on; then I get an invitation to order the new eight CD's, been told only for the Australian folks. OK, now my home is up for sale so I can buy the CD's. Thought I would spend some time trying to make copies of Andre on the PC - put in new ink cartridges, and to TOP OFF all my
craziness, my printer does not work. I am off the wall, frustrated, sleep deprived, mentally stressed, NO offers from Andre for a "free" concert ticket if I seek help. HELP IS RIGHT!! INTERVENTION- INTERVENTION. IT'S SO BAD
I think I mixed cat food instead of tuna
for lunch>\%#@, went to the store to buy
milk, and walked out with a spray bottle of Catnip to spray on the furniture to make your cats happy-WRONG,
I do not own a cat. Defiently out-of-wack-basket-case. Send help....meow

Judith, you have it bad. There is no doubt about it. I think you should relax, (w/a glass of good wine?), put
your feet up, take a deep breath, and put on a couple of your favorite André DVDs. That might help.

Judith, you aren't the only one going bonkers. But for me a different reason. We had one of those leftovers from Dolly, big thunderstorm with downpours. We were without power for three hours this afternoon. Hope everything kept in the freezer as we just went to the store this morning. We're still trying to cool the house down. Now I've got to check out everything on the computer, make sure everythings up to snuff. catch ya all later.........

Hi Judith, no not all DVD players will play PAL.  You must have an "all regions" player.  You can get one on Amazon and I know they are not too expensive.  I got one a year or two ago and they work fine.  Hope this helps.  Hugs

Many thanks for your prompt reply on my
question Jeanine Ann. I think I recall seeing some sort of write up on this site a while back, but could not shake the cob webs from my cranium for the correct answer. Again, my sincere thanks
for your vast wealth of knowledge my special friend. 2 good, 2 bee, 4 gotten.
