This is not an easy thing. There are so many beautiful songs but if I must narrow it down to one I would pick the beautiful "Meditation" from "The Vienna I Love" which I know is a VHS but I am hoping that qualifies.

Jeanine Ann, great minds think alike and all that. A couple of days ago I posted to another site and I also picked Meditation. I would hope that a lot of people would pick some of the older ones. I don't even have my VHS hooked up any more and it would be so much fun to see how people have changed (gotten older) and in some cases looking better than they did way back when. For example, in that length of time (about 12 years) Lin and Rudd have gotten married, had two children, etc. I recently saw an old video somewhere and Lin looked sooo young. I believe in the videos we got, Andre's first real solo was Meditation. Am already excited about next year. Did you get my email about the tickets? I gather your husband is going also? Did he change his mind? We'll be in touch soon.

Hi Virginia, yes I did get your email.  I am so sorry, I have been so busy lately.  Yes my husband is going.  I really want him to go so I am happy about that.

Oh I love playing that Video at the Carre in Amsterdam.  He looked so young (and was) and he played "Meditation" with such feeling.  I have that on a DVD I will make sure you get it.  I listen to it all the time in the car also, along with my favorite Romantic Moments CD.  I think you may be right about that being the first real solo but I also have Andre at the Zenith in France where he plays Ave Maria and that was a solo and I think that was released in 1998 and he looks very young in that DVD.  I forget the date of The Vienna I Love but I think it was either 1995 or 1997.   Talk to you soon. Please note a change on the "Andre Rieu's Greatest Hits" entry.  VHS songs are not eligible and the DVD's from which the songs come must be produced by Denon.  I guess that takes care of "Meditation", darn.  I just love that song as do many others and I just think I must see Andre play that again.  So if anyone has listed "Meditation" as your pick, you have another vote.  Thanks and keep voting.  Your song may be on the tracklist.  Hugs

There are so many that I really like, but if we have to choose only one, I think I will pick the Mozart adagio from the violin concert#3, from the ROMANTIC MOMENTS dvd. One of the reasons for my choice is that I would like to see more violin solos from Andre. There is Song To the Moon, and the adagio by Albinoni, aimer, oh so many, but... if it's only one, I'll have to go with the violin concerto. My two favorite men! (Mozart & Andre)

I also like the Celebration DVD the Spanish parts and of course all the Viennese music on 1OO Jahre Johann Strauß, Cálman, Lehàr and the other Strauß brothers.

I LOVE that piece!

I watched The Vienna I Love last evening just to see him play Meditation again. How is it possible to choose when there are so many that are fabulous? I too lean toward more classical violin solos. There is no more beautiful sound in the world than André playing his Strad, in my opinion!

    My  favorite musical selection is:

  • O Mio Babino Caro...........Live in Tuscany DVD.  This is the musical number that stopped me dead in my tracks as I was channel flipping, looking for something worth watching.   Carmen was just striding onto the stage & this very attractive lady captured my complete & undivided attention.  The orchestra began playing & to my amazement I noticed all the female orchestra members wearing beautiful color co-ordinated pastel gowns & the conductor had his back to the orchestra & was playing a violin.  As physically attractive as Carmen is, her looks are a distant 2nd to her voice.  I was mesmerized by her voice, finally came to my senses, jumped out of my chair & fired up my VCR, this is something I wanted to watch & listen to again & again.
  • What sets this selection apart from all the rest is the emotional response of the audience.  Remember the old man with tears in his eyes?  I must confess to having a lump in my throat when Carmen finished.  Remember the.spontaneous standing ovation Carmen got at the end of the number?

And when Carmen finishes her solos, she is the most flexible; she bends at her knees & waist.  She scoops up the audience into her heart.  I guess what I'm trying to say is Carmen has stage presence that connects with her audience better than anyone, except André

This musical selection is #1 in my heart & mind.  I am so very proud to be able to say that I heard Carmen sing this song live, during a concert here in Phoenix in Dec 2007.  And I have the photos to prove it

This musical selection is sooooo beautiful I'd like to suggest to André , that he include it as a bonus number in each & every DVD + I like to see an interview between André & Carmen giving us the details of how Carmen was selected to sing & who created the ending, when Carmen kneels, holds André's hand & gasps.  I feel so strongly about this being included as a bonus number in all dvd's, that I've written a letter to André , making this suggestion

    Long live Carmen Monarcha

I also am pleased to say that she will be accompanying Andre to his concert here in Perth Western Australia.... I play the Live in Tuscany DVD very often and always skip to No 6 just to hear her angelic voice and it never ever ceases to raise the tears in my eyes ... This is my fave also ... I have 2 more that I feel should be included:

A Childs World …………Flying Dutchman DVD.    When André began to play this song, the camera focused on some of the faces in the audience.  I loved the dawn of recognition that appeared on their faces, when these adults realized André & the JSO were playing a song for children, a song they all knew & sang as children themselves.  The music was beautifully arranged.  It was the total audience participation of singing along with the music, the recital of words that seemed so spontaneous that causes me to enjoy this musical selection time & time again

Adieu mein kleiner Gardeoffizier ………André at Schönbrunn DVD     This is my 3rd & final favorite for the same reasons; I love the catchy tune, have learned the German words, the entire orchestra, all the sopranos, all the Tenors & special guests participate in saying good by to the audience as part of the concert.  What a fitting selection to the end of a beautiful concert.  Again, it is the spontaneous audience participation of standing & singing along with the music that makes this particular number so enduring.

You are right Kati, but Wien, or Vienna was at that time the musical City of the world, all the musicians went there, also a lot of Germans , so was Beethoven, Mozart did not stay long, that is also why André introduces Léhar as a Viennese musician, but I knew as a child that he was Hungarian, also the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy had something to do with it, it was under the Habsburgs one country.

This is like a great musical history lesson. Inge, I still think of Vienna as the birthplace of beautiful music, seems everyone went there at one time or another.Didn't Hadyn live in Austria? He and Mozart are two of my favorite composers, which makes me think, who do you think composed the op3, "Serenade", Haydn or Hoffstetter? Who ever did, it doesn't matter I guess, but I absolutely love the way Andre does it, I've never heard it played better, by anyone! I only have it on the cd, was it ever on any dvd?

Shirley, you got already your answers from Jeanine -Ann and Kati. As far as I know Mozart wrote only 3 violin concertos, but more for piano. My all time favorite is the Nr. 1 violin concerto from Tschaikovsky, that is not tackled by many violinists because it is very difficult, I have it from Yizak Pearlman, he is a super virtuoso, my daughter skated her last program in Vienna to a part of it. I wished André would play it or at least some parts of it.
    1. Saturday, July 19, 2008 8:38 AM Shirley wrote:
Inge, that violin concerto is certainly an intricate & difficult piece for sure. I imagine Andre could play it, but I don't think it would appeal to such a wide audience. An Issac Stern, or a Perlman could get away with it, but I'm not so sure about Andre. I think the music he plays probably appeals to those who like their music on the light side.( this is just my own opinion of course.) I love classical, but not all classical, all the time. I like the variety that Andre gives. There are many pieces, played by Pagginini that I can't tolerate, even thought he was a genius. I guess, IMO, just because it's classical doesn't make it good. I can appreciate the difficulty but not necessarily the sound. Does that make sense?

Hi Shirley. You are saying what I am believing about myself. I like some classical, esp. Beethoven symphonies and piano concertos and esp. his Violin Concerto in D. But I don't really like much else of a lot of classical stuff in general and I definitely don't like it all the time. I really like the classical stuff that André does. He seems to choose music that I like. I also like the lighter stuff and the variety. I had a big collection of classical CDs that I had for a long time, and just never played, so I donated most of it to charity.

Shirley I agree, I am not an all classical enthusiast, as a matter of fact, I have on in my workshop when I do miniatures, a classical station and sometimes I just have to shut it off because the intricate work I am doing and the tormenting piece of a cello or a trumpet hopping up and down the scales just drives my nerves bonkers, so also every body is entitled to their own taste of music and most music is beautiful, not all. I love things from Sarasate and Paganini but I would not like to listen to it all day. André himself does not consider himself as a virtuoso like Stern or Pearlman but he has found his nitch in making people happy with the semi classical music and lets face it, nobody makes the soul so happy as a Johann Strauss Jr. with his waltzes or a Léhar or Cálman, they just have the right combination for people who do not absolutely want to be classical music specialists.

What song I would choose for a new dvd is impossible to decide on.
    I’ve thought long and hard.
When I hear each song that’s a possibility, I think that that one would be the one I would choose, then the next song comes on and I decide that would be better, and on and on.
So, I have to go through “reason” rather than “favorite”, keeping in mind that favorites are definitely included in reason. Make sense?

I think that I would choose the “Adagio” written by Albinoni, from the dvd “Dreaming”. Why? Because André said his father made a list of some of the songs that he should play. André felt that the reason his father chose this for him, was because of the incredible violin solo.
I have a special place in my heart for André’s father for raising this extremely talented, musical, violin-playing Maestro who makes my heart melt when he plays his violin.

Other personal choices I would choose, “Lost Heroes”, “Romance for Clara”, from “Love Around the World”. I would also choose “Ballade”, “Romance [Gadfly]”, “Morning” and “Intermezzo”, from “Dreaming”. Also, “Adagio Aus Dem Klarinettenkinzert in A-dur KV 622” and “Piano Concert Nr. 5 Op. 73, Adagio (Immortal Beloved, Main Theme)” from “Romantic Moments”. Also, “My Heart Will Go On” from “Wonderland” (a personal favorite).
And then one song that the world should hear and really feel deep in their hearts…“This Land is Mine”, from “Wonderland”. This song is not necessarily a violin solo, but it’s an incredible song that touches my heart and soul and I feel that everything in
this world can be made right, if everyone would truly hear it.

Now…having said all that…my first choice would be ANYTHING with an André violin solo. Those are my favorites…and there are SO MANY!!!

I love "Music of the Night", I listen to it every day, several times, and never tire of it. This song is on my list of favorites for sure, and
listening to it makes me forget everything else for a moment.

It is hard, isn't it Marlene, to just choose one. That's why I chose a violin solo myself. But the other night we were watching an older thing we'd taped on PBS, an ice skating special, where the couple had chosen Andre's Amazing Grace. I had forgotten about that one, so I watched the la vie est belle again just to hear that one. OMG... I got goosebumps! The flute, the bagpipes, that has to be one of my picks that's not a violin solo. BTW, it made a beautiful ice skating program too.Dan's in the doghouse because he erased it, he was looking to free up a tape to tape something else. I would have bought him a new tape! I don't even remember the couple's name either.

Oh poor Dan, you know what I do Shirley I hide my Andre stuff so that nothing gets accidentally erasedWell hopefully you will see it again.

Someone here mentioned eye candy and I got some in the mail today.  I won this 8 1/2 x 11 laminated black and white photo of Andre from the cover of Limelight Magazine (the one they had backwards) well this is the right way.  Saw it on Ebay.  It is lovely.  Will  scan it and see if my scanner works.  I only used the scanner once and that was to scan my hand after Andre's high five.  Hugs

Jeanine Ann, it wasn't an Andre tape he erased, just the ice skating tape, with the couple skating to the music of Andre's Amazing Grace. If he had erased an Andre anything, well, he might as well leave home!!

Yes, Amazing Grace, what an incredible song that is. When I listen to it I can hear André's violin. It gives me goosebumps every time that I hear it.
I do believe that I have heard this song more than any song in my entire life. I had never heard it played with a violin accompanyment until I heard André's version. I love it so much!

I agree, Marlene, there are so many pieces I like. I would be happy with your selections as well as many others I have heard. There seems to be a group of songs that keep getting mentioned. Actually, I don't think one DVD would be enough. I think it is going to take 2 or 3 DVDs - a set.

THEY DID LEAVE JSO SOME TIME AGO. LATELY THEY ARE DOING JUST SPECIALS WITH THEM, LIKE THE WORLD TOUR OF VIENNA, OR MAASTRICHT, CARLA WAS NOT EVEN THE SINGER THERE, CARMEN WAS. WE ALL MISS THEM SO MUCH, BEING THERE ON THE REGULAR BASIS. IT IS LIFE, PEOPLE HAVE TO MOVE ON.

HI MIKE, CARLA'S COSTUMES ARE BEAUTIFUL, REALLY ALL OF THEM, ANY TIME THEY DO COME UP WITH SOMETHING SPECIAL. ON THE SCHONNBRUNN DVD ALSO,THEY DO COME VERY CLOSE TO THE COLORS AND MAKES OF THE ERA THEY DID REPRESENT, MEANING THE BALLET DANCERS, THE GUYS UNIFORM, THE FRANZ JOSEPH'S OUTFIT. SOMEONE IS REALLY DOING A GREAT RESEARCH! WHEN CARLA SINGS JULISKA FROM BUDAPEST, MY HEART JUST MELTS. THE OUTFIT IS VERY CLOSE TO THE REAL ONE, PEOPLE AS OF TODAY STILL DRESS UP IN THOSE TRADITIONAL OUTFITS ON CERTAIN OCCASIONS, LIKE EASTER, OR FOLK DANCE PRESENTATION. SADLY, ALL THESE GREAT HUNGARIAN COMPOSERS, WHO'S MUSIC ANDRE AND COMPANY PLAYS SO WELL, BELA SINGS THEM, WITH THE OTHER TENORS, BUT NOT ONE CD OR DVD IS AVAILABLE IN HUNGARY. I UNDERSTAND THERE IS A LANGUAGE BARRIER, MOST PEOPLE SPEAK GERMAN, RATHER THAN ENGLISH BESIDE THE VERY HARD HUNGARIAN LANGUAGE. ANDRE WENT THERE, WANTED A CONCERT, DID NOT WORK OUT FOR WHATEVER REASONS, PEOPLE WOULD LOVE HIM, JUST LIKE IN ANY OTHER COUNTRY, HE COULD TALK TO THEM IN GERMAN, BUT JUST LIKE HE SAID, MUSIC DO NOT NEED WORDS. HUNGARIAN PEOPLE LOVE ALL THOSE OPERETTAS THEY DO PRESENT! THEY REALLY KNOW HOW TO HAVE A GOOD TIME. MAKES ME SAD. KATI

Love all the costumes! Nellie does a fantastic job. What I notice a lot is all the gorgeous pieces of jewelry the ladies wear. They all are a well dressed bunch aren't they? The whole picture of the JSO is so special. No dull black & white only for them. love it.

        Attention All Fans:

Remember when we asked for your favorite song and the DVD on which it is played?

This weekend is your last chance to vote if you have not done so.  I must compile these songs by Sunday and email them to Denon on Monday.

Please vote this weekend if you have not done so.  This is your last chance to help Andre pick his tracks for "Andre Rieu's Greatest Hits".

Thanks much.  I will put a note on the Guestbook page but please vote on this page.
