Andre Rieu’s first visit to New Zealand

Tue, 02 Dec 2008

A Dutch classical music superstar who brought classical music to the masses brought shopping to a halt at Auckland’s Sylvia Park mall today.

Andre Rieu’s first visit to New Zealand had hundreds of the older generation acting like teenagers. People had queued for hours to meet the violinist.

“My mother is 97 and a half and she will be delighted to have her CD signed,” said fan Mary Tomkinson.

Mr Rieu has already wowed Australia with a version of ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and his new CD opens with ‘Pokarekare Ana’.

For those of a certain age Mr Rieu is bigger than Elvis, although this was flying visit he plans to return for his first ever New Zealand show next October.
