    Ira Gershwin
Birth:   Dec. 6, 1896   New York

Death:   Aug. 17, 1983   Los Angeles   California

Lyrical composer, best remembered for his compositions with his equally talented younger brother, George Gershwin. They are responsible for such hit songs as "Someone to Watch over Me" (1926), "Love Walked In" (1937), "Love is Here to Stay" (1937), "Rhapsody in Blue" (1924), and for such musicals as "Of Thee I sing" (1931 - the first musical to ever win a Pulitzer Prize), and "Porgy and Bess" (1935).

Born in New York City to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents, he was trained on the piano early by his mother, who felt music was important to a growing child. While attending the City College of New York, he began writing verse and short poetry bits to the various newspapers. After college, while working as a desk attendant in a Turkish Bath, he began a tentative collaboration with his brother, George, and their first song together, "The Real American Folk Song is a Rag"(1919) was heard in Nora Bayes' "Ladies First" (1919). For a while, Ira used the pseudonym of Arthur Francis, combining the first names of his brother, Arthur, and sister, Frances. Under this pen name, he supplied lyrics for the Broadway show "Two Little Girls in Blue" (1921). By 1924, he began a successful collaboration with his brother, George, and dropped the use of his nom de plume. After George's death in 1937, Ira continued to collaborate with such composers as Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke, Kurt Weil, Jerome Kern, and Harry Warren. For his achievements in film scoring, Ira Gershwin was nominated three times for Academy Award Oscars, for the songs "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "Long Ago and Far Away," "and "The Man That Got Away." In 1966, he received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Maryland. In 1992, a Tony Award for best musical was given to "Crazy For You" (1992), which Ira had written the lyrics for. Ira continuously watched over the Gershwin legacy by donating manuscripts and materials that he and his brother, George, had collaborated on to the Library of Congress, to become part of the American Heritage. Ira Gershwin would die in his sleep in 1983 at his home in Beverly Hills, California, the home that he shared with his wife of 56 years, Leonore. In 1973, the US Postal Service honored the Gershwins with an 8-cent postage stamp in the American Art series. In 1985, Congress awarded a Congressional Gold Medal to the Gershwin brothers, to honor their contribution to the American Spirit. In 1998, the men won a posthumous special Pulitzer Prize, which was awarded on the centennial of his brother's birth.

    Karl Haas

    Birth:   Dec. 6, 1913
    Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany
    Death:   Feb. 6, 2005
    Wayne County Michigan, USA

Revered radio personality and musician whose syndicated program “Adventures in Good Music” was the longest running and most popular daily classical radio program in both national and international broadcast history. Karl brought musical enjoyment and appreciation of classical music to millions of connoisseurs and laymen, and was for many years the most listened to classical music radio program in the world, carried by hundreds of stations in the United States, Australia, Mexico, Panama and world-wide via Armed Forces Radio. Mr. Haas had a great talent for informing, inspiring and delighting his listeners with his vast knowledge of music. Haas began his broadcasting career in 1950 hosting a weekly preview of Detroit Symphony Orchestra concerts. In 1959, Adventures in Good Music was born when WJR, Detroit, offered him a prime-time morning slot to create a one-hour program of classical music and commentary. Born in Speyer am Rhein, Germany, where his mother instructed his first piano lessons, young Karl formed a piano trio with some local friends at age 12. He later studied at the Mannheim Conservatory and the University of Heidelberg. With the increase of Nazism, Mr. Haas and his family fled Germany in 1936 for the USA, where he studied at Detroit's Netzorg School of Music with frequent visits to New York to study under legendary pianist, Artur Schnabel. "Adventures in Good Music" has twice won the coveted George Peabody Award for excellence in broadcasting. The French Government presented Mr. Haas with both the "Officier d'académie" and "Chevalier de l'ordre des arts et lettres" awards; Germany awarded him the "First Class Order of Merit." In 1991 Mr. Haas received the National Endowment for the Humanities' prestigious Charles Frankel Award at a White House ceremony. He also has received eight honorary doctorates and several other academic awards. His popular book, "Inside Music" (1984), is now in its tenth printing and is currently being published in Italian.

    Dear Carla ,

An André concert just isn't complete without a solo from you.

I've attended 3 concerts, all here in Phoenix, Arizona.

Only once, in Dec 2005, have you been part of the concert & you didn't have any solos.

I'm really hoping you will be part of the upcoming 23 June 2009 concert here in Phoenix & that you will sing SOLO.

     Arthur Fiedler

    Orchestra Conductor.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son Emanuel Fiedler, an Austrian-born violinist, and a pianist mother. In 1909, his father took him to Berlin to study violin with Willy Hess. Fiedler also studied chamber music with Ernst von Dohnányi at the Royal Academy in Berlin. He returned to the United States in 1915 and joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra as second violin under conductor Karl Muck.
In 1924, he formed the Boston Sinfonietta, a chamber music orchestra. He later organized a series of free outdoor summer concerts at the Esplanade on the Charles River in Boston. In 1930, Fiedler was appointed the eighteenth conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra. Fiedler deliberately kept performances informal and light and made the Pops the best-known orchestra in the country. Under Fiedler’s direction, the Boston Pops made more recordings than any other orchestra in the world. During his long tenure at the head of the Pops, sales of albums recorded by them exceeded $50 million.
His unique style, musicality, and the appealingly informality in which he presented his concerts made Fiedler a great popularizer of classical music. Fiedler’s popularity also labeled him a rarity; a classical crossover superstar. His many albums on RCA Victor, Polydor, and Deutsche Gramaphon records included "Strauss Family Waltzes," "Old-Timer's Night at the Pops," "Gaite Parisienne," "Evening at Pops," "'Pops' Goes the Trumpet", "Fiedler's All-Time Favorites," "Star Dust," "Irish Night at the Pops," and, "The Best of Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops." His Esplanade concert of July 4, 1976, was heard by over 400,000 people and was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records the largest single audience for a classical music concert.
Fiedler would also appear with the San Francisco Symphony in pops programs from 1951 to 1978. He made guest appearances with other orchestras including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic.
In 1954 the city of Boston dedicated the Arthur Fiedler Foot Bridge on the Charles River. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom at a White House ceremony in 1977, and that same year was given the Freedoms Foundation American Exemplar Award. He directed the Pops for almost fifty years, five seasons longer than all of his predecessors combined. He died in Brookline, Massachusetts following surgery at age 85. Such was his fame; his passing was mourned world wide. He was honored posthumously, being pictured on a 32¢ US postage stamp in the Legends of American Music series, and issued in September of 1997.
    Birth: December 17, 1894

I loved this grand old man! From the first time I ever heard him & then saw him on TV with his 4th of July concerts. You know he reminds me a lot of our own Andre. He was trained in classical music too, but chose to keep his performances informal & light. and like Andre, he was often crticized for "watering down" the music, but he knew what he liked and did it his way & millions of people agreed. Happy Birthday Mr Fiedler!
