Happy 90th Birthday to Raie Leed

    Congratulations on this milestone.

Remember, there are certain perks to reaching this age.

    1. kidnappers are not very interested in you.

    2. In a hostage situation you are likely to be released first.

    3. No one expects you to run anywhere.

    4. There is nothing left to learn the hard way.

    5. Things you buy now won't wear out.

6.Your eyes won't get much worse.

    7. Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them either.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRANZ LEHAR!!

Franz Lehár, circa 1920Franz Lehár (30 April 1870 – 24 October 1948), known in Hungarian as Lehár Ferenc, was an Austrian composer of Hungarian descent, mainly known for his operettas.

    Biography
Lehár was born in the northern part of Komárom, Austria–Hungary (now Komárno in Slovakia) as the eldest son of a bandmaster in the Infantry Regiment No. 50 of the Austro-Hungarian Army. While his younger brother Anton entered cadet school in Vienna to become a professional officer, Franz studied violin and composition at the Prague Conservatory, where his violin teacher was Antonín Bennewitz, but was advised by Antonín Dvořák to focus on composing music. After graduation in 1899 he joined his father's band in Vienna, as assistant bandmaster. In 1902 he became conductor at the historic Vienna Theater an der Wien, where his first opera Wiener Frauen was performed in November of that year.
Signature He is most famous for his operettas – the most successful of which is The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe) – but he also wrote sonatas, symphonic poems, marches, and a number of waltzes (the most popular being Gold und Silber, composed for Princess Metternich's "Gold and Silver" Ball, January 1902), some of which were drawn from his famous operettas. Individual songs from some of the operettas have become standards, notably "Vilja" from The Merry Widow and "You Are My Heart's Delight" ("Dein ist mein ganzes Herz") from The Land of Smiles.

Lehár was also associated with the operatic tenor Richard Tauber, who sang in many of his operettas, beginning with Frasquita (1922), in which Lehár once again found a suitable post-war style. Between 1925 and 1934 he wrote six operettas specifically for Tauber's voice.

By 1935 he decided to form his own publishing house, Glocken-Verlag (“Publishing House of the Bells”), to maximize his personal control over performance rights to his works.

He died in 1948 in Bad Ischl, near Salzburg where he was also buried. His younger brother Anton became the administrator of his estate, promoting the popularity of Franz Lehár's music.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ~~ Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky

    Birth: Apr. 25, 1840

    Death: Oct. 25, 1893

    St. Petersburg, Russian Federation

Composer. Born in Kama-Votkinsk, Vyatka Guberniya in the Ural Mountains of Russia, he began piano studies at age five and before he was ten could read and write French and German. In 1850 he was sent to the St. Petersburg School of Jurisprudence, and after graduation he was appointed as a clerk in the Ministry of Justice. In 1862 he resigned and enrolled the newly founded Saint Petersburg Conservatory, he would remain with the Conservatory as student and teacher for almost sixteen years. His first symphony, "Winter Daydreams", was performed in Moscow in 1868 and was well received. He then won acclaim with his second symphony, "Little Russian", in 1872. He retired from the Conservatory after a nervous breakdown in 1877, the year one of his best known ballets, "Lebedinoe Ozero" (Swan Lake), debuted at the Moscow Imperial Bolshoi Theatre. After his recovery he came under the patronage of Madame Nadezhda von Meck who gave him a yearly allowance which allowed him to devote his time to composition. They never met but corresponded for fourteen years and his fourth symphony was dedicated to Madame von Meck. From 1878 to 1885, Tchaikovsky traveled extensively and was well regarded in Europe as well as in Russia. He presented the 1812 Overture in 1880. In 1888 Russian Tsar Alexander III granted him a yearly pension. His highly regarded ballets, "The Sleeping Beauty" and "The Nutcracker", debuted in 1890 and 1891 respectively. A few days after conducting the premier of his Sixth Symphony, "Pathétique", Tchaikovsky died in Saint Petersburg reportedly of cholera; many scholars now believe that his death was in fact a suicide, and that he drank tainted, un-boiled water deliberately. His legacy included seven symphonies, four orchestral suites, nineteen concertos and orchestral pieces, and more than a dozen ballets and operas, many of which are performed regularly today.

    Burial:

    Alexander Nevsky Monastery

    St. Petersburg, Russian Federation

Plot: Tikhvinskoye Cemetery (The Artist's Necropolis)
