After just having a piece of the best watermelon ever I've got melons on my mind! I'm going looking for a melon festival somewhere & this is the month to do it. The farmer's markets have been full of produce but I'm a melon head. cold, ripe, juicy melons, cools you down on a hot day. We had a mostly cooler July but the heat will now build up again. Back to school ads reminds me I'd better enjoy the rest of these warmer days. I think I'll freeze some green grapes for tomorrow. Another cool & refreshing treat.
Just like listening to Andre's music, food for the gods.

Since my husband Terry and I saw Andre and the JSO in concert at Subiaco Oval in Perth, Western Australia, we are now huge fans of his and the JSO. Their music is very entertaining and we love nothing more than to sit back of an evening and enjoy one of his many DVD's or listen to one of his CD's. It was extremely relaxing and entertaining. If we were asked what our most favourite concert has been, we would now be telling everyone Andre would be on top of our list. He is a perfectionist when it comes to playing the violin and the JSO are the same. They bring magic into the homes of many people who love this kind of music. Many thanks to you all for the wonderful entertainment you have given so many people over the last few years. It is very much appreciated.
Our love to you all and keep up the good work.

With a great deal of sadness I have to report that "Sam" the little Koala who survived the tragic bushfires in Victoria earlier this year has died this afternoon from complications.
Sam became "Symbol" of the bushfires when she was found by a volunteer and rescued from the fires but had very severe burns. Sam's passing after a six month struggle is a timely reminder of the trauma and struggles so many of our fellow Aussies are still enduring on a daily basis. It is so easy to forget when the camera's turn off.
    Rest in peace now "Sammy"

This is just one more reminder of the devastation & loss of so many during that horrible time.

                                                                             SAM JOINS PHAR LAP

BUSHFIRE legend Sam the koala will be preserved and displayed in the Melbourne Museum as a symbol of February's devastating fires.
Premier John Brumby confirmed that Sam's carers had accepted an offer from the museum to display the koala, who died during surgery on Thursday.
The body of the champion racehorse Phar Lap is also on show at the museum, but it is not known if Sam will be displayed in the same vicinity.
Mr Brumby said having Sam in the museum would ensure her story and the story of the bushfires was told to the millions of Victorians and interstate and overseas visitors who come to the museum.
"We will never forget the people and communities affected by those fires and we will never forget the courage and kindness of the firefighters and volunteers who helped them," he said.
"The story of Sam will help us to understand and remember the devastation that the events of February 2009 had on the people of this state and their extraordinary determination to recover and move forward with their lives."
Sam became a symbol of hope amid the ashes after extraordinary images of her drinking from CFA firefighter David Tree's water bottle were flashed around the world.
The picture, which was sold through the Herald Sun, raised $500,000 for the CFA and the Southern Ash Wildlife Shelter, which cared for Sam as she recovered from her burns.
Sam overcame her bushfire injuries but could not beat the terrible disease chlamydia.
A spokeswoman for Mr Brumby said the details of how Sam will be preserved and displayed were not yet known.
Robin Hirst, Museum Victoria director of exhibitions, said it was vital Sam join Phar Lap at the museum.
"She is associated with a very important image from those terrible times."

        Kathleen Cuthbertson
        HeraldSun.
NB. Phar Lap is the Immortal Australian Racehorse from the 1930's. He is fully preserved and on display at the museum.

This is somehow a very fitting memorial.Sam won the hearts of people all over the world, for all the above reasons.I have even gotten e-mails with Sam's picture, from people who hadn't even realized about the terrible fires in Australia so I would send them a link to the Herald Sun & so many then would send in donations to help. We are, after all, tied together, when tragedy stikes anywhere we do what we can to help. I think Sam should have a place of honor.

Op 4 september in het Amsterdams Arena zal mijn moeder Soelinah van Poeteren-Forner, eindelijk van dichtbij mogen genieten van André Rieu. Ze krijgt namelijk een toegangskaart voor haar verjaardag.

Jammer genoeg zonder mijn vader.

Australians often take a jar when going to work overseas for any length of time because we're all so used to it and the taste is probably addictive.
Just a thin scrape is delicious on fresh bread with butter. People not used to it try to use too much - as if it was jam or peanut butter. That is definitely not a good taste, it's very strong.
I've heard it described as 'looks like axel grease and tastes like rusty nails' and that's probably pretty accurate.
Anyway, it has recently been purchased from Kraft Australia by an American company and they're already fiddling with it. Are running a competition to find a new name and are starting to make it as a creamy spread that has to be kept in the fridge.
That's what I meant yesterday when I said "is nothing sacred"?
Where are you Grayeme? Come and help me here.

You have done an excellent job defending our beloved "Vegemite". The only thing is though...that the new one is not going to replace the original, it will still be Vegemite. No one would be game enough to touch that.!!! The new one is just a milder version and by the taste of it, I think it is mixed with cream cheese. Actually I don't mind it. The new one is aimed at the export market as the US banned the original over something to do with added Foliants or something. To pass through this life without the pleasure of Vegemite on your taste buds is almost incomprehendable. !!!

Isn't it amazing how our taste buds develop?  I saw a clip of 3 young women, cousins, all eating Vegemite.  2 girls were born in the US, the other in Australia.  The 2 US girls, 1 couldn't even swallow it, the other barely got it down.  The Aussie cousin, had put it on toast or something and loved it, having grown up with it.  It was really cute.

I think it must be no different that someone who grows up eating liver or bratwurst and those who don't.

Babies and young children love it on bread or toast, so do cats and dogs.
We used to put a touch of it on our children's dummies when they were babies and hard to settle. Worked like a charm.

I just had a look on my jar to see what it's made from - have never really thought about it before.
Ingredients are yeast extract, salt and barley malt. I don't think there would be too many Australian homes that didn't have a jar in the cupboard. All motels and hotels have it on their breakfast menu, so if you're ever visiting here you must try it - but remember - just a thin scrape. Maybe that's why the new owners are changing it to a creamy spread - so we'll eat more.
It's Sunday morning here. Grayeme is very quiet (after starting this discussion in the first place). He must be having a sleep in.
I'd love to try some of Andre's jam. Rum in blackberry jam sounds extra good. Fancy him growing blackberries, they grow as huge bushes in paddocks here and are considered a weed. I would think he'd have well trained vines somehow.

Below is a message I received from Andre's Australian Website.
If there are any Aussie fans that attended a concert in Australia last year and would like to participate in this...then let me know on the "here on the blog". I will contact you and see that it gets to them. Come on...get your name in "lights"..!!!

    Dear Grayeme,

I am putting together a brand new DVD called André's Australian Adventures and I need your help! I'm looking for YOUR input for this special release. Were you at one of my concerts? Did you perhaps see me in the streets in November last year? After all...we were there for nearly one whole month! What was your most memorable moment? I will be choosing my favourite's and publishing them in the booklet of this great new 'behind-the-scenes' DVD.

If you are chosen I will also publish a photograph of you to put next to your 'Rieu-memory'. Perhaps you have a photograph of yourself with me! I had such a fantastic time in Australia and am re-living the adventure again with all the footage in the editing studio. I can't wait to read all about how YOU remember the visit!

    See you all soon!
    André

ok Jeanine Ann, I needed this this morning! You know, a smile a day keeps the doctor away! Right now I am mellowing out with Romantic Moments. Did you ever hear anything quite so beautiful as that one? And earlier it was Romance For Clara. I just almost come undone with that one. Sweet dreams everyone.

My friends! I’m so thrilled to tell you of two DVD releases this month. Hopeless romantic that I am, I’ve put together for you a 5-DVD set of some of the most romantic music I’ve performed with my orchestra. It’s called “Be My Love”.
And direct from Maastricht in July this year is the DVD “Live in Maastricht – 3” full of fun and more than a few surprises!

They’ll both be available in September, so look out for them!

Aha! Andre on the ice. I would like to see his feet to see if he actually has his skates on. I imagine he could ice skate though as it seems most, or a lot, of the Dutch do. I never learned to skate on ice, only roller skates. I was surprised to learn that some type of wheel skates had been used on the roads in Holland as far back as the 18th century. Anyway it seems Andre has several modes of transportation, hmmm?

I always knew Andre could do everything and now I know it - from the hot air balloon to the skating.  Is there anything that he cannot do?? : )  I have photos of him skating in Maastricht so I figured he could skate.  He also has a brilliant mind!

I love the Holiday on ice photo! The colors and the smiles make it so enjoyable and André makes it perfect.

André does seem to experience many things, he's very creative and brings all this happiness to us. There's never a dull moment of wondering if there is going to be something different, because there always is something different. Does that make sense? André keeps boredom out of life and makes everything exciting, happy and allows dreaming to be a constant.

I am not much of a believer in the zodiac, but I have to say that Andre, as a Libra, seems to have many of the attributes of a Libra. Example, "Libra is the most sociable of the signs, knows how to be a charming host or hostess, seeks balance in all that it does, Artistically, tries to balance form, content, colors and elements, and for this reason can be drawn toward creative endeavors. Libra is the shuttle diplomats of the zodiac, going back and forth between the extremes until a solution is negotiated. active minds and a good command of language, have to seek ways to give their thoughts temporary respite from their never-ending movements. As the key planet of Libra, Venus is about the perception of beauty as an ideal. Here, she is the proper blend of colors, the right mix of music or the perfect poetic description of love, itself.
Libra Greatest Strength: Your grace and charm when helping others
Libra Possible Weakness: Forgetting to take care of your own needs
Doesn't this seem to fit the maestro?

Yes it does Prudence.  It should also say beautiful of face and heart and soul.  Hugs

Thanks Prudence for this zodiac information about Libra. My mom was born on the 2nd of October, and this fits her too, very much so. I don't necessarily follow the Zodiac either, but in many ways it seems to fit the person who was born in that certain period of time.
This explanation certainly fits what we know about André.

Andre on the ice, Andre at the North Pole & here I was, this morning, thinking it was cold at 55 degrees! This is very unusual, in August, for our neck of the woods. Gosh, where else would Andre want to go? I read maybe the moon? yikes!I was watching a video of the space shuttle, Discovery, how the crew all entered the shuttle, & how cramped up they all were, seven crew people & not an inch to spare, packed in like sardines in a can! Could Andre handle that? He couldn't take the JSO with him, so who? I guess he could go to the moon & once there play Song To the Moon. That would certainly gain world wide attention wouldn't it? Well it will be worth watching to see what plans he has in the future. I guess the sky's the limit!
