GERMANY
Dutch Violinist André Rieu Honored

The Karlsmedal, given annually to an entertainer who has contributed in a special way to a united Europe, will be awarded on May 6 to André Rieu. According to the Limburger Daily, the jury says the Dutch violinist emphasizes "the common cultural roots of Europe." Rieu's latest concert tour uses a 410-foot wide replica of the Schönbrunn Castle in Vienna as its setting.

Marcel Philipp, the president of the jury said Thursday, that by making classical music accessible to the everyone, Rieu uses the musical language every European understands and contributes to identification with the European cultural tradition. Rieu himself is happy and takes it as encouragement to keep on bringing classical music to a broad public.
