The Australian has revealed the owner of subscription arts channel, Ovation, will continue to broadcast despite losing its contract with Foxtel and Austar.

Gerry Travers has confirmed Ovation would relaunch as a premium independent channel further down the spectrum on channel 134 when the new arts channel Stvdio launches in April on channel 132.

Viewers will only be able to receive the channel next month through platforms Select TV and Optus. But Travers hopes that new technology will be installed by June, allowing its return to Foxtel and Austar.

“We have direct contact with all our audience and this is exactly what they wanted to hear.

“We are the first general entertainment channel to self-distribute (and) we’ve done it because we think Ovation has a good brand and a special place in Australian Foxtel lounge rooms.”

Foxtel inherited Ovation in 2002 from Optus when it allowed the two platforms to deliver content in tandem. However, Ovation’s heavy programming of Andre Rieu concerts is said to have greatly annoyed senior executives.

Foxtel called for interested parties to pitch for its new arts channel late last year. SBS Commercial, who won the rights, will earn substantial revenue from the opperation of the new channel. Chief executive, Kim Williams, said SBS “has had a wonderfully open and expansive, genuine outreach, which is exactly one of the challenges we set.”

Ovation, who have to pay for access to the Foxtel and Austar platform, will charge subscribers an additional $10 a month on top of package prices to access the channel.

I think that this is most unfair we only got Austar last October because we wanted to see Andre and the JSO...we had never had pay TV before because we are on a pension... due to ill health and not being able to get out much we plumbed for Austar.... now to get the chanell we wanted in the first place we have to pay more....I think that when our contract ends at the 12 month period we will stop getting it altogether...so they will loose our custom.

Joy McKenzie re Ovation channel. Ovation remains in the Optus and Selectv packages as normal. Negotiations are in progress with Austar. What that means I don`t know. Log onto www.ovationchannel.com.au to keep up to date with this information

I will always love ovation because on 160307 my birthday I met André in Live from Dublin. He said Happy Birthday and MY Heart will go On both of which were extremely relevant to me at the time and now ofcourse

I think this is most unfair, as a lot of the people who watch Andre on Ovation are older people and those on pensions. This $10 per month is unafforadable to people in those situations. They have to miss out . $10 per month, on top of the monthly Foxtel/ Austar fees is just too much. They are pricing themselves out of a large portion of the viewers market.

I rang Austar regarding the Ovation channel and they told me it will cost members an extra $6 per month and that all the channels we got before we will be the same....can anyone confirm this????
