Violinist Andre Rieu set to perform in Newcastle

VIOLINIST Andre Rieu has announced his debut North East show.

The world’s most popular classical instrumentalist will end his first ever UK tour with a concert at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on September 30, with tickets going on sale from Monday.

The violinist has been in the higher regions of the British album chart for three months with his CD Forever Vienna.

Having topped the Billboard Hot Tour rankings with his sold-out world stadium tour last year, the Dutch violinist and conductor brings his spectacular production to the UK for the first time.

Kicking off at London’s O2 Arena on September 22, Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra, choir and soloists will visit arenas in Birmingham, Dublin, Belfast and Manchester as well as Newcastle.

A musical phenomenon, André Rieu is unlike anything else in the entertainment world.

Music fans can expect the experience of a lifetime when they attend one of the only classical concerts where the audience jump to their feet and dance in the aisles.

Having already created an international revival in waltz music with his spellbinding musical extravaganzas, Rieu very quickly won the hearts of the British public with the release of his album Forever Vienna, which smashed chart records by reaching No 2 of the UK pop charts as well as going straight in at No.1 in the classical charts. At last, fans across the country can see for themselves just why André Rieu is one of the biggest solo male touring artists in the world.

Conducting the Johann Strauss Orchestra with his violin bow – just like the composer himself – Rieu’s onstage charisma and rock-star demeanour make his live shows simply irresistible.

Rieu was born into a musical family on October 1, 1949, in Maastricht in the Netherlands.

He began studying violin at the age of five.

His father was conductor of the Maastricht Symphony Orchestra.

From a very young age he developed a fascination with orchestra.

He studied violin at the Conservatoire Royal in Liège and in the Conservatorium Maastricht, between 1968 and 1973.

From 1974 to 1977, he attended the Music Academy in Brussels, studying with André Gertler, winning the Premier Prix at the academy.

At university he performed the Gold and Silver Waltz by Franz Lehár.

Encouraged by the audience reaction, he decided to pursue the waltz form.

Rieu formed the Maastricht Salon Orchestra and performed as a violinist with the Limburg Symphony Orchestra.

In 1987, he created the Johann Strauss Orchestra and his own production company
