Violin superstar Andre Rieu says he would play at the AFL Grand Final
The Daily Telegraph

Andre Rieu has tour commitments this year, but has offered his services to play at future AFL Grand Finals.

VIOLIN superstar Andre Rieu has offered to play at an AFL Grand Final - and write a footy waltz for the event.

"I love to play at sporting events - the excitement and anticipation of the crowds is similar to what happens at my concerts, so it's a beautiful fit," Rieu told the Sunday Herald Sun.

"I would love to play at the AFL Grand Final. We'll make a date and I'll write a football waltz especially for you."

Would Andre Rieu be a good fit to perform at a future AFL Grand Final? Have your say below.

His comments come as concert promoter Michael Gudinski and the AFL make a wish list of star attractions for half-time entertainment.

Rieu, a favourite of AFL boss Andrew Demetriou, tops that wish list.

"The AFL want to make it bigger and brighter over the next few years," Gudinski told the Herald Sun last month.

"You don't want to be predictable. You need different ideas. I think it will get more and more interesting."

Rieu cannot play the 2010 event because he has tour commitments. But he is open to performing at a Grand Final in future.

"I've always thought of music as a sport," Rieu said.

"It requires the same rigour, discipline and dedication.

"And you never know the outcome. In sport, you win or lose a game. In music, you win or lose your audience."

Rieu, who has performed at football events in Europe, predicts an AFL Grand Final crowd will embrace his music.

"Contrary to popular opinion, classical music does not have to be enjoyed amid exclusive circles," he said.

"There need not be any snobbishness attached to it. It's there for everyone. I play for the people."

In Australia, Rieu is one of the biggest-selling music artists of all time. His 2009 world tour was ranked as the year's fourth-biggest earner.

He releases a new album, You Raise Me Up, on April 30, and will tour Australia in October.
