Queen of Bling Khanyi Mbau stepped out from the shadows this weekend to attend a performance by King of Waltz Andre Rieu and his 110-member Johan Strauss Orchestra.
Adorned in grey chinchilla and accompanied by The unis Crous (who spent last weekend spoiling his wife Primrose for her birthday), Mbau explained another hidden aspect of her persona when she told Sowetan: “This genre of music is more my cup of tea. It is another side of real me that people don’t really know".
"I have always loved classical music – it is the foundation of any other sound musically."
She described herself as one of Andre Rieu’s biggest fans.
“I am familiar with most of the waltz and cello songs –the sound of them took me back to my childhood and reminded me of my grandmother, who was such a fan of classical music. I could even smell my grandmother’s perfume as I listened – I felt like I was 12 again standing in my granny’s kitchen,” said Mbau.
Describing a memorable aspect of the show, she said: “I loved the Michael Jackson elements especially ‘Heal the World’ which featured local soprano Nokrismesi Skota, Mirusia Lowerse from Australia and the 40-strong Bloemfontein Children’s Choir. The performance really touched me".
In Mbau’s dramatic style – no shuttles or taxis for this young lady - she travelled to the show at Sun City in Crous’s Lamborghini, which was later parked in prominent eye-catching locations around the resort.
Mbau was one of many recognisable faces at Rieu’s concert –also amongst the audience was FIFA Local Organising Committee’s chief executive officer Danny Jordaan, who took an evening off to enjoy the orchestral movements with his family.
“I have come here to relax in the first place and Rieu’s music is both classical and accessible. The show has been wonderful this evening,” said Jordaan.
Rieu’s show had a 5,628-strong audience. Local sales of his DVD have reached over 300,000 in South Africa.
He will also be visiting Durban and Cape Town. Speaking about the tour, Rieu said: “My orchestra and I are so excited to be in South Africa. We are very much looking forward to meeting our fans. Just bring your hearts to the concert and we will have an unforgettable night (or afternoon) together”.

As Andre shares his gift & vision with SA children, I offer the following; one man's experience during WW2, serving in Middle East, Jordan, Turkey, Suez Canal, Johannesburg etc., and feeling deeply for the lives and future of children.
This is my Dad & I'm very proud that he is so! WW2 British Air Force, seconded to land army as required).
-Young soldiers stood on guard upon this lonely bridge,
by day they watched, looked all around
examinined space & every ridge.
At night one soldier did return,
a solitary soul,
to think of home & wonder why we need such deathly toll.
He thought of home & impoverished times and if he again would see
Those stone cold floors, no luxuries -
yet faces full of glee!
The bridge that night revealed a secret
which you and I don't know-
children huddled to keep safe & warm, no food, no love, no home.
The Soldier cried, his heart was heavy "No child should live these fears"-
He would return to poverty, yet loved ones to wipe his tears.
War is not the place for him, a better World he did perceive,
In circa '40 his mind so far from battle he knew he would soon leave.
From innocence & poverty, through War and returning home,
This Soldier's heart shared goodness
with All and when alone;
Lessons learned, passed down through time, felt in the heart and soul,
Will surely lead us best we can to make this World a whole!
(God bless 'all' those who experience the worst, yet learn & give of the heart to make a better World, whether it be a cause far from home, or very close to home). God bless those who have much they can spare and will contribute by creating opportunity!
