Frank Steijns Helps The Hungry In Africa

Frank Steijns, the carillonneur of the St. Pancratius Church in Heerlen and member of the JSO , played his carillon enthusiastically in support of the drive to collect money for the starving in the Horn of Africa. Frank drew attention when he played his carillon as if he wanted to shout out: “People pay money into Account 555!”

“The Red Cross asked all Dutch carillon players to give a concert in support of the action to make deposits into Account 555 and I gladly responded by playing the carillon of the St. Pancratius Church in Heerlen and the St. Martin Church in Were. Unfortunately I could not play the carillon of the town hall in Maastricht , because it is currently being renovated,” says Frank Steijns who has fixed the bell ringer of the three carillons. He played the African song “We Are The World” by Michael Jackson.

Frank Steijns has been the carillon player in Maastricht since October 1997 and also plays the violin in the Johann Strauss Orchestra of André Rieu. The carillon has been the traditional instrument for many centuries. People love to listen, whistle and dance to the melodies of the carillon. In 2005 Frank ran up and down the stairs of the church during the Vrijthof concerts of André Rieu and entertained the fans when he played on the Servaas carillon. During the André Rieu World Tour in 2006 Frank played a solo on his unique mobile carillon with 41 bells.

The famine in Somalia is so intense and many children have died over the past three months. It is heartwarming to see that Frank Steijns care so much. André and his JSO are all very special people, that is why we love them so much!
