Piracy red carpet for Rieu

by Edwin Timmer

MEXICO CITY - Piracy versions of his CDs and DVDs rolled out the red carpet for Andre Rieu in Mexico

Thanks to the extensive sales of pirated music discs the tickets for his live concerts did not drag. These days the Limburg violinist and orchestra play in the leading raving rooms in the Latin American country.  "I was stunned”, says Rieu. “ Last year we thought, let's try Mexico. I was already world famous in the streets! Thanks to the illegal sales in numerous market stalls”, said the Limburg violinist after one of his performances.

The Stradivarius player can only laugh about piracy. Ticket sales for the concerts are selling like a runaway train. Besides nearly 50,000 tickets in Mexico City, 13,500 tickets were sold in Guadalajara and another 5,000 in Monterrey, according to the Limburger.
"In Mexico there are good rules against piracy, but it's obviously flexible and sports to deal with," jokes the musician. "I'm not afraid of these illegal copies or downloads. My audience would still prefer a real disc in their hands."

The official sales numbers indicate the same for the Limburger. For example, Rieu and his Mexican Fiesta Mexicana DVD sales are on top of the charts, and even tops that of Amy Winehouse. He also occupies the first, fifth and ninth position of the top 10 best selling CDs. "Mexico could use a little joy," he told the grateful audience on Saturday night, indicating the drug war that is sadly tearing the country apart. It is also special that Rieu visited Monterrey that is stricken by violence for months.

"Yes, we just went. We also played in Christchurch, New Zealand, one day after the earthquake. Our hotel was not even standing. But the audience loved it," says the famous Limburger.
